desvenlafaxine is an Effexor metabolite that only differs by the removal of a methyl group. Wyeth is contending that it is more of a balanced 5-HT/NE compound than its parent, however, I'm not sure the balanced ratio will reach the level of its main SNRI contender, Cymbalta (duloxetine).
Scepticism is certainly warranted given the debate over lexapro/celexa, however, one blog makes the comparison between imipramine and desipramine in showing how a minor tweak of a compound actually did lead to a significantly superior tricyclic.
