Really bummed not much works for ADD for me

Posted by TriedEveryDrug on July 3, 2009, at 15:39:04

just venting here. Got inattentive ADD and severe laziness - on weekends I tend to stay in bed all day.

desipramine sort of works, makes me miserable though, and it doesn't mix well with anything.

adderall - gets me out of bed and doing things. BUT makes me less attentive.

strattera - could not tolerate it more than a week from insomnia. could not get close to effective doses.

effexor - sort of works, makes me lazy though. GI problems.

wellbutrin - GI problems and anxiety. lexapro helps w/ the anxiety, but the GI problems are bad.

maybe I'll try the strattera again with something... If I can only get up to the effective dose.

sigh...

I would look at insomnia as possibly an indicator that the drug is doing what it is supposed to do. It might subside or disappear altogether over time. Start at a very low dosage and move up gradually. Perhaps you have an unusually low therapeutic dosage range. If not, at least you will be easing your system into seeing the drug on a daily basis. That might make it more tolerable and enable you to get to the higher dosages. I have seen Strattera work wonders for a few people with adult ADD. I never questioned them about insomnia, though. If I run into them, I will ask.

Yes, I can tell you whether Strattera causes insomnia.
It does, quite intensely. After about a week or two, this effect subsides.
In the initial trials of this drug in 1985, when it was viewed as a potential antidepressant, the investigator mentions that at one point, every single patient was taking chloral hydrate to combat the insomnia.
In children, on the other hand, it seems to cause sleepiness.

Vyvanse? I find it less aggravating than adderall (especially at low doses) In fact, this time around it is so different from the adderall its like not even being on a stimulant but I am better able to think....

Have you tried ritalin and provigil? I've heard some natural things like magnesium can help with ADD.

You may be depressed as well. Maybe Concerta (or Provigil) + an SSRI? Fluoxetine and sertraline are supposed to be the least sedating. Sertraline doesn't have the long half life, so is easier to discontinue. If you still feel sedated from the SSRI, you can add either Zofan (a pricey 5ht3 antagonist) or maybe low dose naltrexone. Or energy drinks until the fatigue dissipates.
