HI all-
I had one of those overnight sleep tests about 6 years ago and I couldn't sleep so they sent me home. The pdoc then based his final conclusion that I didn't have any sleep abnormalities on 20 mins of data that showed I went briefly into the light stage of sleep. Yeah--ridiculous I know.
Anyway, my brother has sleep apnea - I have been told I snore very loud, have allergies, rhinitis, deviated septum, large tonsils, etc - what I'm trying to say is that I thinkI may have sleep apnea due to what I just wrote and that I have not been able to achieve "restoritive" sleep in over 10 years.
So, I want to have another FULL sleep test done - but what if I can't sleep again??? It's hard enough for me to sleep alone in my apt - or even WITH someone in my bed - none the less in a hospital/clinic environment with all these leads hooked up to me.
I'd LOVE to hear from anyone who has ever had a sleep exam in general and with any of the problems I list above.
My brother who was discovered to have sleep apnea and eventually had his tonsils and sinuses routed (sp?) out now sleeps peacefully every night and feels fully charged up the next morning. (That breathing machine thin CPAP? didn't work for him).
so- please - anyone with any info or experience???
Thanks'
Jerry

I had the same trouble... I don't have an answer, but annoying, isn't it? In my case, I can't sleep on my back, it has always caused apnea... on my stomach is ok though.

I have to chuckle. I had the same problem. In fact, I was so nervous the night before my sleep test that I couldn't sleep! So then the test came, and I got myself all psyched up--very nervous, but okay--and they sent me home due to snow.
I scheduled another trip, this time on the spur of the moment. I called, they had a cancellation, I took it. I didn't have time to get nervous the night before because there was no night before!
But it snowed again, so I said forget it.
I have not been back. I am too afraid that I won't sleep, and it will be a waste of time.
But I have insomnia. Apnea is way more serious.
My suggestion to you is to ask the lab to call you the day of a cancellation. The less you think about it, the better.
Good luck. : )>

Why don't you just deprive yourself of a bit of sleep, get up really early and do lots of strenuous activity during the day, then maybe you might sleep ?

Not all sleep labs are the same. Some are terrible. My first sleep study was a bad joke too. I told them the second time, 3 years later (at a different place), "if I don't fall asleep till 7AM then you stay and watch me". And they had no problem with that. The second test was at Lincoln memorial in Phx, I won't say wich was the rotten one in N. Scottsdale. But getting it done right has made a huge differance. Good luck. Boss those clowns around they work for you.

I don't know if this would apply to your situation, but when they tested me for sleep apnea they gave me a small machine to take home.
There's a thing that lightly fits/clips around one of your fingers (and was attached to the the machine by a wire), and I just slept in my own bed, as usual.
Maybe the technology has changed - or maybe we're talking about diferent things... Hope this helps.
