Anyone - Info on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Posted by LT on November 4, 1998, at 14:50:51

I posted on 10-25 to Dr. Bob with no response. Does anyone know about TMS research other than on the east coast? This sounds like an exciting alternative to ECT!! I did have an appointment with a Dr. who said I was a candidate for ECT, but did not have much info on TMS. I started Celexa today after a 10 day wash out period of Prozac. I have been on numerous antidepressants for the last 10 years and would like to find out more about TMS before I venture into ECT. Of course, I'm hoping the Celexa will be the miracle drug that won't "poop out" like all of the others!!

I couldn't find anything on TMS studies anywhere but the east coast. However, I have a number for the research center in Bethesda, Maryland and they may be able to give you information on studies being done elsewhere. It's the Patient Recruitment Center, 1-800-411-1222.

TMS sites

Bethesda, MD: TMS Patient Recruitment Center, 1-800-411-1222.

Alvaro’s List:
LT:

I've had TMS here in Boston; didn't help me then but that was a one-size-fits-all treatment. I'm going back in January for a customized course of TMS which is more promising. Here is a list of TMS sites given me by Dr. Pascual-Leone; I'd also call his office at Beth Israel here; he and his assts are very friendly and helpful. Good luck!

Enclosed please find a list of some of the centers around the US that are currently recruiting patients for studies using repetitive TMS.

This list was compiled based on the responses from the
investigators to an e-mail message through a TMS-Listserver from the
International Society for Transcranial Stimulation (ISTS). It is
likely that the list is incomplete and that other sites around the
nation might be recruiting patients for different TMS studies.

Trade you for celexa info

LT:

Hope the TMS site info is helpful. I'd like to hear about your experience w/ Celexa as you go along, if you don't mind; I haven't been able to tolerate any SSRIs but my current meds don't address serotonin, and I'm considering Celexa.

Thanks,

carter

Carter, thank you very much for the info, I will definitely check into it further. This is my 7th day on Celexa, I think i'm at a point where I have less & less Prozac in my system and not enough Celexa. However, so far no bad side effects, which is more than I can say for several other antidepressants I have tried. I have also been on several that did work, just not for long! If you don't mind, I would be interested in hearing more about your first TMS experience, any side effects, & how you became involved with it? Also, have you had ECT?

I also participated in an rTMS study on the East Coast. I was able to drive myself to and from the treatments which was much more appealing than hospitalization or finding someone to take care of me. The treatment took about 45 minutes each day. I had two weeks of treatment with very few side effects--just a slight headache occasionally. Nothing an advil couldn't get rid of quickly. I felt a little better, but it didn't last for more than a few days. A friend of mine who was looking for an alternative to ECT which, while effective, was very time consuming and incapacitating for him, also tried the rTMS with much better results. He is hoping to get approval for another series of treatment and then maintenance treatment. I saw you were given the names of some other places working with TMS. I encourage you to try it. Good luck!

> LT: I have been taking celexa for two weeks now, and have noticed some improvement to may general attituide. However, I understand that it will be another week,or two, untill I realize the full effect. At first I had some problems with sleep, but that seems O.K. now. I am experiencing very bad head aches at night, and will speak to my Dr. at the next visit.
