It was said before, but defense mechanisms are something developed by EVERYONE.
As a small child, we all develop defense mechanisms. It's our way of handling our parent's not being there when we want them there, or dealing with pain, or loss, or anything else negative.
Sometimes these mechanisms can become pathological. That's what happens with DID. or Borderline. Then we need to unlearn the negative patterns and learn better ones.
Gifts are given to us by deity. (Or by nature for those that have no deity.) Sometimes our gifts and our defense mechanisms are intertwined. A gift of a great imagination can fuel the defense mechanism of DID. Completely new "persons" are created to deal with unbearable situations.
Sometimes we are taught to suppress or to not acknowledge our gifts in the name of humility. As someone once said, RuneWolf, "That's a slap in the face of deity who gave us those gifts". Everyone should be encouraged to express the gifts they were given. Our positive defense mechanisms should be nurtured. Our negative defense mechanisms should be redirected to more positive ones. DBT is a great tool for that.

Blessings.
