Parnate and melatonin

Posted by FredPotter on October 4, 2009, at 22:31:39

I'm trying to take 40mg of Parnate (tranylcypromine)/day. It makes me very sleepy with an inner restlessness, which is all right at weekends usually, but not at work. Several papers mention that Parnate stimulates the production of melatonin. This is presumably what tells my brain and body it's bed-time. This link has several interesting observations regarding melatonin

including its antidepressant effect. Is this why Parnate's onset of action can be so quick?

Unfortunately, the idea that taking Parnate in the evening will therefore give a good-night's sleep is horribly wrong. It causes me total insomnia.

So what's going on? Could it be that Parnate acts like an on/off toggle, maybe for the signal from the pineal gland? I'm trying 50mg diclofenac (the NSAID) to see if it can help fend of the sleep in the day

Fred
