My first involuntary round of ECT (age 20) was terrible, and it was followed by another round, age 23. :-(
More extreme psychiatric treatments can help, but there's more potential to harm, too. Look at lobotomies. Some people clearly benefited, some were turned into vegetables (or died), and there were many in between.Anyway, for me, psychosocial rehabilitatin made all the difference. I did a 1 year Christian residential rehab program age 24-25. That put things in the right direction. Most of my memories of childhood up to about 22,23 or so, are still wiped out. I'm still re-building my vocabulary. My social skills have improved, thankfully.
