I thought ECT did something weird to my cognitive abilities, too. But then I wasn't sure whether it was that or all the other psych meds. And then there were the drugs. Spotting mj oil off al foil can't be that great for ya... And I remember doing stupid things like smoking matches in science at school to freak the teacher out...
I think the brain is more like a muscle than most people think. That it adapts to the demands that you make of it, I mean. If you work to improve it by actively exercising it then it adapts and gets better at what you make it do. If you don't try because you don't believe you can well then... You never will.
When I quit smoking I couldn't focus on anything. Couldn't read technical stuff like I could before. Couldn't do focused editing of my writing. I am regaining that... But it is something of a process, I think. It has taken a couple of years.
