In reply to drugs with norepinephrine reuptake properties, posted by Michael Bell on December 29, 2008, at 15:21:27
Ya, I notice the extra sensitivity, emotions all over the board, quite often too when on a norepinephrine drug. Right now I am on imipramine as an add-on to fluoxetine, and having some of the same issues I had with high dose Effexor XR. It feels like what I would imagine as the male version of PMS. (with all due respect :) But I seem to need a bit of norepinephrine stimulation, which as long as it doesn't spill over into anxiety or triggers a manic episode, helps me with my "avoident personality disorder" problems.
I have found an occasional hit of high dose melatonin to seem to calm the norepinephrine stimulation, if it gets too bad. Benzo's are probably the best tx, IMHO, especially Xanax, around the 1mg three times a day dose. If I am at home, and not going out (i.e. driving or to work or whatever) I can take 2 to even 3 mg of Xanax (only once in a blue moon) and it just relaxes me, maybe even into a bit of a 'drugged' haze, like no other. And I've been on benzos for about 12 years, and I still can get that effect! But, I almost never do that, and usually I end up falling asleep after that high a dose. This is what I call my "big, red, temporary relief" button, for days when everything is just HORRIFIC. I think we all deserve one of these. I've used it once this year. For me, it seems better then smoking pot, as I really hate the "smoke" part of it all.(I get a kind of "dirty" feeling, what I imagine would be similar if smoking tobacco or anything else.)
Sorry for the rambling...excellent topic!
Thanks,
Jay
