Has anyone ever successfully withdrawn?

Posted by TimeLord on January 21, 2009, at 10:29:21

I've been on meds for almost 21 years. My doc thinks that CBT is a great choice for me and took me off my meds, which has been iffy at best...

I am unable to sleep well, I am super apathetic, I get OCD thinking and am NOT diagnosed OCD (or ever was)... but my anxiety is gone and panic.

However, I worry that I am never going to get back to normal, that I'll always feel messed up. I've only been off the meds for 8 months and had to take them for a short interval (one week) to get some freaking sleep, but apart from that, has ANYONE ever gotten off these meds successfully? Anyone you know? I can't find ONE success story anywhere... and that makes me really wonder about long term use and damage caused by it.

Your Dr. must put you on something that works. There is no such thing as a successful sleepless withdrawal. Sleep is when our bodies heal itself.Speak up for yourself and get the help you need. It seems scarry but I went through two Drs,and now I have one who listen to me. I know when somethings wrong, it's my body.I take 600 mg twice a day and klonzepam when I feel anxious. Live an easy life, turn away from conflict and let people know that you can't always join in their raindeer games[joke]

Why stop taking meds?? I can understand if you want to only be on one and not a cocktail. If you feel good and you don't have any noticeable side effects, why stop????

I got off zoloft after 8 years of feeling pretty good, 5 months later I had a major mixed episode.

Is it really worth relapsing and suffering from the damage that depression/anxiety can do to the brain?

Hey, if you can do it successfully and feel good and live a good live, more power to ya.

The most likely explanation for why people get depressed again after stopping medication is because they are depressed. I don't buy into this long term damage done by medications idea as much as I used to.

You have been off the meds for 8 months. That is great. I would have to say, after 8 months, if you are not having any withdrawal symptoms, and you feel somewhat normal, your brain has healed and you are free of any possible long term ill effects of the medication you were on.

As far as regular old AD's go, I'm not sure if they do any long term damage to the brain/body. Now as far as some of the atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizers are concerned, I'm not so sure.

I think I successfully withdrew from Zoloft. It was very very fast. Within one week all the withdrawal symptoms were gone. I looked and felt healthy. Only problem was, I was undiagnosed BP and 6 months later the perfect storm came together to send me spinning into a major mixed episode.

I had been on Zoloft for years
