Crumbs...
As an slight aside.. Clubs in Amsterdam used to have a little guy with a chemistry set of some sort that would test ecstasy pills and tell you roughly what dodgies they contained and how much MDMA they contained!

What's a dodgie??????
and what's a MDMA, for Christ's Sake??????
Guess I'm old as well.
Older than Racer, or just less wise.

I meant "dodgy ingredients" by dodgies.. not quite sure what happened to my brain there!
And MDMA is what, theoretically atleast, ecstasy is.. (MDMA = 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) But, often then contain many other "dodgy ingredients", and often not MDMA at all.
The other ingredients can make the pills very dangerous, and so, in certain clubs in Amsterdam (well, in the mid 90's anyway), there would be someone who would test your ecstasy pills for you, to let you know what they contained.
Hope that makes some more sense

Elisa test and the Western blot are used to test for lymes's Disease the Western blot is the only reliable one. Love Phillipa

What did my post have to do with Lyme's Disease?

Nothing that was my point the Elisa test is used to diagnose lynes along with the Western Blot. Just thought you could have been confused about the name of the test. Since I have never taken illegal meds I have no clue how they test for them. I only know the unrine and blood tests for alchohol and illegal substances when you are drug tested for a job. Love Phillipa

ELISA is a kind of test. There are ELISA tests for many different things, from blood type to HIV to Lyme's to certain illegal drugs. It's not a specific test for any one thing, but a method of testing.

That's the only other word I've ever heard for date rape drug. I got that word from the ya-ya sisterhood movie, that of course I watched so many times I broke the tape but can still quote many many lines from.

Hi Racer,
When he was a teenager my husband got yelled at by his mother for keeping LSD in the freezer. It wasn't his- it was his older brother's, who now has a PhD in pharmacology. ROFL.

Well dodgy is a really common word here in the UK.
From wikipedia dictionary:

This is a slightly dodgy plan, because there is a lot that is being changed for this fix.deviant
He's a dodgy Peeping Tom.weird

According to google it is used to pick up any infectious disease including HIV from illegal drug use by dirty needles and blood leading to hepatitis C. It doesn't pick up an actual drug you may have used. Just the result of and it is a very inaccurated test. Love Phillipa Oh and very often lymes needs much further testing as it is positive for syphylis which of course I had to be further testing for hence the Western Blot and a bunch of other ones Igg etc.

I've done an ELISA before, in my cell bio lab.
I dropped that class though, so I don't remember the details.

I remember antibodies are involved. Antibodies that are absorbed onto this plastic plate with wells.

> DenebIt's not about being a bad student, Deneb. It's about not remembering something that really isn't applicable to you. Selective inattention or selective retention.
And frankly, I only remember the very basics of it.
And because I can't resist the urge to offer advice: check out the way you describe yourself. In the past 24 hours or so, you've told me you don't have my brains and that you are a bad student. There's nothing wrong with your brain, and you could be a great student if you chose to be, but as long as you continue to spin yourself so negatively, you're gonna be wasting energy. How about this, just as an experiment: for one week, speak of yourself as you would speak of someone else, for whom you felt respect and affection. Even if you don't quite believe it, even if it feels as though you're bragging, speak of yourself as if you liked you. Even when you're talking to yourself. Just -- give it a try. Maybe you'll find you feel better.
And please take all this in the spirit in which it is offered, you know?

Deneb could you maybe look up the actural definition of the Elisa test? Google there are just too many sites and they all refer to infection. Aids, lymes, hepatitis C. I know it's not acurate for a diagnosis for lymes but what will it tell about other diseases and druges you may have used. Is it specific or does only tell you've either been exposed or have used a specific drug. I know the Western Blot is for Lymes and says whether you have ever had it and it will always be positive if you've had the disease. the others are beyond my knowledge. Love Phillipa

The Western Blot is a technique. It's the transfer of the results of an RNA electrophoresis onto a membrane. It's like a Northern Blot, but with RNA. It can be used to check for specific RNAs.
There is also something called a Northern Blot which I'm more familiar with, that involves DNA. You chop up DNA with restriction endonucleases and electrophoresis them. Then you use a Northern Blot to transfer the pattern of DNA migration onto a membrane. You visualize the bands of DNA using DNA probes with markers.

Sorry, I wasn't really explaining things too well in my last post. I should have explained things like electrophoresis, but I didn't.
In electrophoresis, you make this gel, with little wells at the top. Then you fill each well with a different mixture of either chopped up RNAs or DNAs. Then you run an electric current through the gel and the bands of DNA or RNA migrate through the gel. Bands are separated out according to the length of the segments of RNA or DNA.

Deneb so that's what the bands mean. Supposedly the number of bands tells how bad the lymes is. You can E-mail me more of this info if gg wants to get back to the original topic. Love jan

Argh! This just proves how stupid I am.
A Western blot is for proteins. A Northern blot is for RNA and a Southern blot is for DNA.
I previously wrote down that a Western was for RNA and a Northern is for DNA.
I suddenly woke up this morning and that's the first thing that popped into my head.
