I said I wasn't going to see "Brokeback Mountain" bec. ppl said it was sad, and I don't tend to like sad movies. Well, I was intruiged and went to see it anyway, and I loved it. BUT, I have this nagging question, and it's a really stupid question. WHY would a rancher in WY hire a couple of guys to take his sheep up into the mountains? I assumed he had a ranch bec. he had all those sheep.

Hi Phillipa,
I liked it, but other ppl I know didn't. One person said it was the longest movie she'd ever seen....she said it felt like it was 6 hours long.... - it was a little over 2. I don't think my husband would like it very much. Not his kind of movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but I think livestock move from place to place throughout the year. If Alex was here she could tell us about sheep. Not about Iowa or montana or whatever. can you believe Ang Lee has made crouching tiger, hulk, and this?

Have'nt you ever heard the saying "The only stupid question is the one not asked." This is how the human race learns. I am no expert but I have friends with cattle and they ship them out to pasture in the summer (usually to crown land, wich they lease) so that their pasture on their own property has time to recuperate for the fall when the cows come home before winter. They don't hire anyone to watch them, they just set them loose in the bush (in a large fenced area, hundreds of acres) and check on them periodically to make sure they have sufficient water (usually a swamp or creek) and are'nt ill. They don't hire people to watch them because there are'nt many predators for cows around here especially when they are in a heard. Another saying I just thought of is " There are no stupid questions." Sorry it's so long and rambling hopefully it answers your question. If I have written anything incorrect about ranching all ranchers and farmers feel free to correct me. As I said this is second hand info and I am not a rancher.
All my best,
Laura

most livestock needs to be rotated to new fields for grazing, especially sheep. They tend to pull up roots and kill grass.
I think moving the sheep on the mountain gives the rancher time to let his fields "rest" for the summer.
I've heard of this before.
What did you think of the movie? It's still reverberating with me (after 3 weeks)

Brokeback mountain is a heartbreaking movie, but I won't say don't go see it.
It is about two roughneck men in Wyoming that realize and try to live with the fact that they love each other. One of them, Ennis, absolutely refuses to get in touch with himself or realize he might be gay.
For me, it is a story about knowing your true self and having the guts to live a genuine life.
As a survivor of abuse, it was particularly relevant to me, because I tend to totally split off from myself.I realized that I don't want to live that way anymore and I owe to myself to at least try to connect with my life and find people and stuff that I can love.
It's a universal story in that way. I wouldn't be afraid of it.

Thanks for the replies. It was just a question that kept nagging at me.LW yes, they really stick with me. Visual images can haunt me, so I tend not to go see sad movies.
HF madeline gave a good review. It was a good movie. I reallly liked it. Maybe there's a trailer you can watch online.
thanks again,

I'm the same way. Schindler's List stayed with me for DAYS! Maybe even weeks. Its the reason I didn't go see Hotel Rowanda. I know I couldn't handle that one. Its just too much. Although I have to say I rate Schindler's List as one of the best movies of all time. So maybe I need to suck it up and see these movies. No. no, no! I heard Hotel Rowanda shows stuff happening to little kids! I just couldn't handle that!

T did you see Sophie's Choice? Nothing could be worse than than movie. One woman ran out in tears hysterically crying. I could never make a choice of which of my children would live and which would die. I was effected for years and even now writing this I see her with each child. Fondly, Phillipa

Do you think that the man's (forgot his name --- the one that dies) wife knew he was gay? and knew how he really died?
Yes, I loved the movie. My husband did go see it with me. I think he liked it, but commented more on the photography and music --- typical.

Hi Annie,
I got the impression that she knew, and that was why they showed how he was really killed as she was talking to Ennis on the phone. She was so cold and the conversation was so calculated....like it was rehearsed.
My husband and I went to see The Pink Panther today. I know it was wasn't rated well, but we enjoyed it - we love comedies. Can't wait for The Shaggy Dog with Tim Allen to come out. We also saw a preview for (somebody's ?) Family Reunion, and that looked hysterical.

When I first heard of the movie they said "cowboys" and I thought cattle.
Then I heard it was sheep! I knew then I would never be able to see it in the theater without laughing my tush off.
2 guys and sheep? It sounds too much like too many aggie jokes I've heard....
This is the end of the thread.
