Have'nt you ever heard the saying "The only stupid question is the one not asked." This is how the human race learns. I am no expert but I have friends with cattle and they ship them out to pasture in the summer (usually to crown land, wich they lease) so that their pasture on their own property has time to recuperate for the fall when the cows come home before winter. They don't hire anyone to watch them, they just set them loose in the bush (in a large fenced area, hundreds of acres) and check on them periodically to make sure they have sufficient water (usually a swamp or creek) and are'nt ill. They don't hire people to watch them because there are'nt many predators for cows around here especially when they are in a heard. Another saying I just thought of is " There are no stupid questions." Sorry it's so long and rambling hopefully it answers your question. If I have written anything incorrect about ranching all ranchers and farmers feel free to correct me. As I said this is second hand info and I am not a rancher.
All my best,
Laura
