I can so relate to the wee hours thing, I retired (went to bed) at 1:00am and was up by 5:00am and I know now I will be tired all day. Is there something good you can take with effexor for sleep?

This isn't insomnia for me. I never go to bed until at least 2am. That's what I get for working 3-11 when a Nurse. Had to have time to wind down. So now I still do the same thing I did then. Stay up late and sleep late. I'm on a totally different schedule that the rest of the world. Well If I worked nights I'd sleep all day. So I guess this isn't really that bad. But just two meals a day. Fondly, Phillipa

Phillipa,
I am a nurse as well. I work casual at an extended care unit. Being casual means I have to do all different shifts, 3-11, 11-7, 7-3, as well as some 4hr shifts. This can make it very hard to maintain a sleeping schedule, especially with a kid.
All my best,
Laura

My heart goes out to you. How do you manage to do all the shifts with a small child? I could never have done that. I once tried 7pm to 7am. Didn't have a problem till around 5am then I'd get nauseuous and could never sleep after I got home past 12. How do you do it? I was lucky atleast I didn't children at home when working nights. Now 3=ll was my favorite shift. Sleep late in the am and then still time to run errands, work out, etc. Then work at a reasonable time to come home. I did know a lot of nurses who loved the night shift. Usually their family tended their children during the day while they slept. Fondly Phillipa in the sincerest way

Wow! So many things I want to address in this thread.
1st off, Ambien: I've seen my brother go to sleep on Ambien, while standing, leaning against a wall. And he couldn't remember past a certain point that night. Its pretty potent.
Insomnia: I'm reading that book by Stephen King right now! I read it years ago but didn't remember much about it. (Okay, that was random, I know).
Nurses: You are truly amazing people. I really am in awe. I spent alot of time with nurses while caring for my Grandmother, both in hospitals and the dialysis center. I'll never forget the dialysis nurse who would call me whenever he thought I should know something about her condition, or how kind the nurses were when they took Grandmother off life support.
And as for something less sad, a hobby: I bought a beginners kit to learn how to knit. I haven't started yet, but I think I might like it.
Since I'm trying to find exercise that I enjoy, I'm looking into buying a bike so I can explore the trails around here, and I also plan to start doing yoga again at home (which I used to really love). And today I discovered some dvd's that use dancing as a workout. They looked really cool!
I know these are pretty solitary activities, but I have to start somewhere. I'm so inactive right now, but knowing myself, its just a matter of taking that first step to get me started. I'm the biggest procrastinator on earth, and I've already mentioned some of these things at one time or another, but I feel a change coming on. I know I can't just keep on the way I have been if I want to actually 'live' my life instead of just watching it go by. I've been taking baby steps to change. I think maybe its time I took grownup steps.
