Anybody other than me remember them? I'm going to totally date myself here, but who cares. I just saw a club ad in the newspaper. The band, the New York Dolls, has reformed, and is playing Toronto tonight. Two original members are still alive.
This band was the proto-punk, the one that made a whole new era of rock possible. I saw them in 1973, at Massey Hall in Toronto. They brought a bar band with them from New York to open the show. Maybe you've heard of them? They were called Kiss. Nobody would believe me when I described *that* band.
The memories.

Hi Larry,
I don't know the New York Dolls, but I had a T shirt with KISS spelled out in rhinestones. Though I never saw them in concert, so maybe that doesn't count.

lol.. if it makes you feel better, I know who they are. The original "glam" band really. Not that I'm leaving out Bowie mind you.
Truth be told Kiss began modeling themselves after the Dolls, and it evolved from there. Wild that they are "reforming".

I don't remember them, but I had a similar experience. In '71 I believe. I went to see Grand Funk and they had a little known backup band called 'Yes' Wonderful!
And speaking of vintage, there was a song around the same time and I draw a blank as to who did it. The song was DOA and there were sounds of an ambulance in it. DOA is a heck of a thing to google on, too. Any ideas?

You're so right. Glam, not punk. Glam morphed into punk, IMHO. Bowie stands alone. He is Bowie.

Kiss was still doing bars in NY, so I heard. This was one of their big breaks, to do a stage show. And NYD were helping them along, of course. Quite the party, backstage.
They did the whole drum riser in the air, fire 15 feet high, blood and gore finale that they later used on tour as a headliner, but they did it as an opening act.
Of the Dolls, there's only Sylvain Sylvain and David Johansen left. The original bass player died last year of leukemia. Two guitarists never made it into the 90's, I think.
Memories. Thanks for sharing.

What a colossal mis-match! But what a lovely and amazing suprise that would have been. Yes is right up there as one of my fave live acts. Seen them a good half dozen times. Never disappoint. Chris Squire is the best bass player ever lived, IMHO.

I also found a band that did an album called DOA. I love this name. "Throbbing Gristle". <heh>

I went through a big English rock phase in the early '70's, Mel. I loved Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd. But my favorite group was Yes and my favorite album (remember albums?) was/is "Close to the Edge" - sort of a central theme in my life.

Yes (Close to the Edge) was superb music.

"Fragile" sort of resonated with me also. Books, music, shrimp - you're quite the renaissance woman falls. : ) Toph

Wonderful album. I have it - album and CD.
Remember albums? We've got hundreds! And two working turntables - ours and the one I just inherited of my father's.
Anyone want an Electrovoice Georgian speaker?

Oh YESSSS..:-) Also one of my fave bands of all time. I might argue a bit that Geddy Lee is the numero-uno bass player, but Squire is amazing and no doubt about that! Geddy is the reason I picked up the bass though...'cause he has had my heart since I was about 10 year's old, when "Permanent Waves" came out. I've been to every single concert since, and saw Rush at the 15,000 + packed Molson Ampitheater in Toronto last summer. Neil Peart's drum solo...sorry but NOBODY can even come near that..period. :-) Go check out his new website at www.neilpeart.net and www.rush.com> > And speaking of vintage, there was a song around the same time and I draw a blank as to who did it. Both Geddy and Chris had Rickenbacker 4003 stereo bass guitars. I love that guitar. Geddy uses others now, but he still has an old "teardrop" cutdown Fender from the old days.
Ya, I took up bass because of these guys, but even with the same bass, I couldn't get the same sounds. :(
I just checked. They list at nearly $1700! Mine's a 1971. Might be a model 4001. I forget.

Youngster! I was seeing Rush in bars and high schools. Opening for Nazareth, "Working Man" era.

Only Toronto date I've ever missed.

Ya, Neil is the best drummer. Did you ever see Keith Moon, though? Different style, but equally as gifted.
Hey Jay. If you can swing those passes to the show in Peterborough for Tom Cochrane, that would be way kewl. It would be great to do the real live thing.

lol. Everytime I scroll down this board, I think "What a healthy attitude!" Everyone should date themselves once and again. Bring themselves flowers and chocolate.
Then I look at the context, and realizing I'm missing a common idiom.

once in a while. Maybe we should create a special "Me" day (along the lines of Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day . . .), and give ourselves a nice card, flowers, chocolates and perhaps even a spa treat such as a massage.
My younger brother is still trying to get a Sons' Day and a Brothers' Day created. He just wants more presents LOL, and isn't ashamed to admit it.

My husband has to stay overnight at work from time to time and that's when I date myself. I cook spicy food for myself (which my husband hates), put the kids to bed nice and early, and watch a movie on TV, with a glass or two of wine. I love it. Maybe next time I'll buy myself some flowers!
