Needs some help from the UK

Posted by daisym on February 11, 2005, at 23:08:16

I received an email today from a young mom who lives in Wales. She has a three month old baby who seems to be developmentally delayed and may have vision problems. She is from the states (married a welshman) and doesn't know where to do for help.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone could give me to pass along. I'm sending her stuff but here in the states we have laws about services for disabled children. All I know so far is that mom took depakote, for seizure disorder, throughout her pregnancy (high dose). The concerns are that the baby is not tracking things visually, not smiling to outside stimulus.

My heart just broke- my prayers and thoughts go to her, let her know that.

I found this: http://www.cafamily.org.uk/ it's a site for families with children with disabilities, it seems to have some information to give her some direction. It looks like it deals with how to help a family cope and where to get the child some help too. It lists Wales as an area that they cover.

There is also this site: http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/disability_liv_allowance2.asp
It seems to help families secure an allowance for care for children with disabilities in the UK.

I'll continue to look, but I wanted to post something for now.

My whole heart goes out to her and the child.

wow, Angielala, thank you SO much. This is really helpful. I will send all of this to her. I can't imagine how alone and scared she must feel, so far away from her family.

It makes me remember how blessed I am that my children are healthy.

I knew the babble community would help. :)

I wish resources for this kind of help was readily available everywhere.

I just hope something I found will get her some help.

Please let me know how she does, and if she needs more help. Maybe a University in Wales could help her too- I know they have some excellent schools there.

You are so wonderful to reach out for her.
