could someone describe symptoms for the following

Posted by bonnie_ann on February 26, 2002, at 21:26:46

What are the primary symptoms for
BiPolar, GAD, Depression and Borderline Personality disorder?

When I read on these I find it hard to tell the difference.

I just worry I'm not on the *right* medication.

Thanks,
Bonnie

Hey Miss Bonnie,

I keep passing over your heading w/a twinge of guilty annoyance. Guilt b/c no one's responded, including me, and annoyed, well I don't want to burden you w/ my annoyance, that's for you to consider at your own pace and leisure, if at all.

So, you've read up on these various disorders and can't tell one from the other? Fair enough, it's a specialized language, it takes getting used to, but like anything else the more effort you put into your studies the more focused and intelligent your questions will be.

If you feel rejected, I'm sure it's not out of ill will, it's more likely due to the scope of your inquiry. Sorry it took this long for you to get an explanation, and I hope you come back with more details. I've noticed that detailed posts tend to generate the more detailed responses.

Anyway, thanks, and remember the archives.

Bonnie

I just found a web site which I think is fairly new. You do have to log in, but the procedure is fairly straight forward, name yadaa yadaa yadaa. www.psychiatrymatters.md

Now for my interpretations of the symptoms. Hint for GAD: You worry wether you are on the correct medication. Typical of GAD, worrying about everything. For myself the thoughts were so constant and vague that I didn't even recognize them. For bi-polar there are different classifications. My only experience with this disorder has been when an acquaintance was manic, I couldn't differentiate it from schizophrenia. So in my opinion, someone with bipolar would be diagnosed by the medical community because their symptoms would lead their family or friends to seek help, or worse case scenario contact with the law. I'm not keen on the diagnosis of the personality disorders because in my opinion they are subjective. Unless you are having significant difficulty at work, home, and with social contacts I wouldn't worry about this group of disorders.

As always these are just my opinions, and as always I have many and they are not to be argued with.

BEST WISHES
Willow

Thanks for answering- I worry about if I'm on the right medication, I wonder whats really wrong with me, it still isn't clear to me and it's been 2 years. The Dr I see is a physicians assistant and always writes GAD on the bottom of my slip, my therapist doesn't act like there's anything seriously wrong. I do have a hard time with my parents- meeting people is awkward, some people at work just are stupidly annoying and I don't like to talk or look at them. I'm constantly worrying about my marriage- I never know when I'm overreacting or have a right to bitch. I'm in my head too much- trying to figure out what the meaning is behind each sad moment, anxious feeling, and bad thought. I read and find these symptoms in all three of those. But, there are some symptoms listed that don't match mine. Do I make any sense? I'm just constantly looking for the answer.

Hi Bonnie,

Can't help you much with the GAD or Bipolar, but am quite familiar with Borderline Personality Disorder. Many of the BPD traits can be seen in other disorders, too, so it's hard to say, and probably not something that's possible for you yourself to diagnose.

What are the symptoms that don't "fit" for you?

There are a few things specific to BPD that might not occur in GAD or BP:

--deliberate self-injury or eating disorder

--a kind of "blank" emptiness, hideous boredom that's not just "depression", intolerance of the seeming inanity of others

--black/white thinking: either someone you care about is ALL good, wonderful, amazing -- or they're ALL bad, hurtful, etc. This can switch in the blink of an eye.

--intense "overinterpretation" of others' behaviors, words, facial expressions -- always with a negative, devaluing interpretation for oneself

--dissociative episodes -- raging out of control (parapsychotic episodes) over tiny things, "blanking out", feeling removed from your body, holes and gaps in your memory.

Why not just ask your pdoc why you have the GAD diagnosis, and what your medication concerns are?

hang in,
Helen

I know I should be talking to my Dr about the medication, but for now it's ok. I don't want to make any changes until my life becomes somewhat settled. Thank you for describing the symptoms of BPD.
Someday I will see a pysch doc, I always question if I really need to. I work fulltime, take care of my family and myself, go to therapy etc.... I'm functioning and that's what counts.
