T emailed me!

Posted by peddidle on August 20, 2007, at 18:49:53

Wow, I was not expecting that at all! She apologized for not having emailed in so long. She said her home computer needs to be repaired and that she didn't make much of an effort to be online elsewhere. She's back at school now, and she asked me to call and set something up, or email her and she would set it up for me.

That's all she said-- she didn't actually respond to anything I wrote (over a month ago), but I do appreciate the fact that she responded after so long.

I'm not sure what she means by "set something up"... school starts next week... does she want me to set up an appointment now? Or does she want to talk to me before that?

I think you should definitely call her ASAP and see what she offers.

I'm glad you finally heard from her -- you are way more patient than me. LOL

I would say she wants you to set up an appointment so that all the 'good' slots aren't taken by the time school starts again. Sounds like she wants to start seeing you ASAP when you get back. I'm so glad she emailed you back.

Sounds like she wants you to call and set up an appointment. Or email her and she will set up the appointment for you. Probably she wants to know your schedule so you guys can work out a time.

Thanks everyone!

I took your advice and emailed her back-- I asked if she wanted me to set something up now, or wait until I got back to school. She said she we should set something up now, because she's pretty open at this point, so to email her with some times that work for me for the semester, and then she'll let me know what works for her. Then at the end of the email, she wrote, "Can't wait to see you." :)

So I have an appointment set up with her... it's not the time slot I would have picked, but I'm sure she had her reasons.

This is going to sound stupid, but I'm a little worried about her having an appointment after mine. I'm not worried about someone seeing me leave her office of anything like that, rather, I don't like knowing that as soon as my session is over she'll move on to someone else. It's selfish, I know, but even last semester I would see the girl who had the appointment right before me leave, and it actually made feel good to know that I didn't have to think about anyone coming in after me. Last fall, my time was 11AM, and she goes to lunch at 12. Last semester, my time was 3pm on Thursdays, which is not only the last appointment of the day, but her last appointment for the week (she is at her private practice on Fridays). This time isn't set in stone or anything, so when I see her I guess I could just say that I would rather schedule my regular appointment for a time when I don't have a class immediately following, which is also true-- sometimes my sessions run over, which I like, but won't even have that opportunity if I'm worried about being late to class. It's also possible that she won't have anyone scheduled after me.

What do you guys think I should do? How do you feel about knowing that your T is seeing someone right after you, and/or knowing that you have to be somewhere immediately following your session?

Hi,
I think you should definitely try to change it if it's going to bother you. And I would do it now, while her schedule's still open. It doesn't really bother me about having someone after me as long as my T doesn't talk to them in the waiting room before I'm out the door to the office (it's only happened once). But I definitely schedule my sessions so I have nothing after if at all possible. And my T even pays attention to that without my ever having said anything. He'll make sure if he has to switch a session that I have nothing afterwards, or that I have time to collect myself.

Go for it. Schedules aren't something I think T's care very much about in terms of them being rock solid, so I would call the office and switch it around.

I've never found it bothers me overmuch, as long as he doesn't seem like he's trying to get rid of me to see them. My therapist never runs a second long anyway, and I think he takes a ten minute break between sessions.

It was much worse the time he was running late, so I came in right after his previous client and the seat was still warm. :(

Have you requested that you be the last of her day? Or of her morning? I asked my therapist if I could be in the morning while he's fresh, and while he could only do that one day of two because of his schedule, at least I know I asked.

I [passive-aggressively] decided to keep the appointment for tomorrow. I'm wondering if she had a reason for choosing that time slot, because it was the first one I said I had open... maybe she wanted to see me as soon as possible, or maybe it's because the pdoc comes on Wednesdays, and she's going to try to talk me into seeing her...

I'm going to try to tell her that I would rather see her on Wednesdays when I won't have anything immediately afterwords. It's so nice that your T is conscientious of the fact that you need time to collect yourself and regroup after sessions. I think my T would be sensitive to that as well, if I mentioned it to her.

I'm starting to think I may be overreacting about my T having another session immediately following mine. I think you're right-- as long as I don't see the person, and she doesn't start talking to them before I'm out the door, it shouldn't be a problem.

**My T tends to run long. I must admit, I get a little annoyed when the session before mine runs long, but my sessions sometimes run 10, 20, 30 minutes over. I try to tell myself to be sensitive to the fact that she should give the person she's with a little extra time if they need it. I always appreciate it when she spends extra time with me, so I should extend that same courtesy to her other clients.

I think my T tries to take at least a few minutes in between sessions. She'll often pop into the waiting room and tell me to go ahead in, she just has to run to the bathroom. I hope that's just one of her ways of taking a little breather between sessions, and that she doesn't feel like she needs to really prepare herself (in an "oh no, not this one again" kind of way) before she sees me. :)

**Oo, yeah, I hate when that happens.

**I haven't requested to be her last appointment of her day or morning, it just sort of worked out that way these last two semesters. Good for you for being able to tell your therapist about your scheduling preferences, and it's good that he made an effort to accomodate you. I think I'll try to mention that I would rather see her on Wednesdays, because aside from the fact that I won't have anything right after my session, it'll occupy part of that entire free afternoon.

problem solved?

I got an email from the secretary saying that my T's son is sick today. It actually kind of threw me a little bit, because it was so formal: "There is a conflict in Dr. ___ schedule..." I call my T by her first name, so it was just a little strange to read it that way, But anyway, I rescheduled for tomorrow. So, knowing her, at the end of the session, she'll say "Does this time work for you?" and then I can tell her that I actually prefer Wednesdays over Tuesdays. Woohoo!!

Yup! She started to say "I'll see you on Tuesday," but then asked if the Wednesday worked better. I still don't like not being her last appointment of the day, but if her schedule is the same as last year, then she is the person available for walk-ins and emergencies on Wednesdays, so there is always the possibility that she won't see anyone after me some days... I think she actually saw someone after me today though :(

Thank you so much for asking, Dinah!

I'm glad it worked out better for you :) (nm) » peddidle
