I went back to therapy!

I'd been undecided all summer whether to go back to therapy. It terminated about 3 months ago because I was going away for the summer.

It all went ok, she was really nice with me. I was more honest than I'd been before, especially about how I felt about going to therapy and about my cutting which has been getting worse recently. She said that seh will probably see me for the next academic year so thats good I suppose.

I seem to feel worse now than I have all summer. I dont know whether I've been trying not to think about things because I havent got anyone to talk to and now I've had a chance to think everything seems closer, or maybe its therapy that makes me feel worse. It feels so contradictory that I need someone to talk to but when I have I feel worse than before.

Congratulations. :)

Perhaps the feeling bad will be short lived. You're just bringing these things up for the first time in a while. But I'd mention it to your therapist. She might have some ideas to prepare you psychologically before discussing difficult issues.

As the old saying goes, sometimes you have to feel worse before you can feel better. That you were more honest in your last session than in the past is a positive step in the right direction.

If you do decide to quit therapy, talk it over with her first. I almost quit last week, because I didn't think it was helping, and I told my therapist that. I ended up agreeing to stick with it, because I realized that quitting therapy was more emotionally damaging then keeping at it.

Good for you! It's not surprising that you feel worse after talking about painful things. It "stirs things up" and can be really unsettling. Give it some time, and I bet you'll feel much better.

Even though I feel worse (and I know thats 'normal'!!) I think this attempt at therapy is going abit better than last time.

Since I read lots of posts here I've seen what other people discuss with their therapists and its made me alot more confident with mine. When I first started I didnt really know how it worked, what I was meant to say and how honest I could be without her thinking I was wierd.

Thanks for your support and I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
