Why some psych drugs make my Crohn's worse

Posted by TriedEveryDrug on June 6, 2009, at 22:23:47

I have inflammatory bowel disease. Some drugs appear to make me have flare-ups. Remeron does this to me. Others, like desipramine reduce my symptoms.

I just noticed this on wikipedia about the 5-HT2A receptor:

"Other 5-HT2A agonists like LSD also have potent anti-inflammatory effects against TNF-alpha induced inflammation."

Well, TNF (tumor necrosis factor) is targeted by the latest crohn's drugs.

And sure enough, mirtazipine is a 5-HT2A antagonist.

Case closed?

(though this doesn't explain why effexor/pristiq make my crohn's worse but not as bad as remeron - I don't see anything written about them and 5-HT2a blocking action)

SRIs do bind to blood platelets and inhibit serotonins uptake, I believe. I don't know the ramifications this has on blood levels, though.
