Fluvoxamin

Posted by Lamdage22 on May 28, 2016, at 5:21:56

True or false:

Luvox is the SSRI least apt to worsen psychosis.

Luvox is the SSRI least apt to cause sexual side effects. (Aside from Viibryd and Brintellix)

Luvox is likely to help psychosis and anxiety.

Thanks

Jeroen I've read that it is better for psychotic depression. Always worried me as not psychotic myself. Maybe this was a new finding after it was released? Phillipa

>Luvox is the SSRI least apt to worsen psychosis.

SSRIs do not usually worsen psychosis in people who take an antipsychotic at the same time, unless they are prone to manic or mixed episodes, in which case all SSRIs have the potential to aggravate certain symptoms. Some people may be more affected by one SSRI than another.

>Luvox is the SSRI least apt to cause sexual side effects. (Aside from Viibryd and Brintellix)

Luvox allegedly causes less ejaculatory dysfunction that the worst offenders eg. paroxetine.

>Luvox is likely to help psychosis and anxiety.

It's likely to help some types of anxiety, but not all. I doubt it will help psychosis, at least not on its own.

The main issues with Luvox are nausea, drowsiness/fatigue and withdrawal symptoms when stopped.

Hi Jeroen,

Lyme disease is rare in Belgium. Have you put any more tunes on YouTube recently?

I disagree with Ed on the psychosis issue. Luvox is known to improve psychotic depression as a monotherapy more effectively than other ssris.

Hi Link,

I've heard this too, but I wasn't meaning psychotic depression specifically. I've not come across evidence that fluvoxamine is especially useful in schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. It could be worth a try though.

Hi Ed,

Yes, there is no clear evidence that luvox works as an antipsychotic in individuals with no concurrent depressive symptoms.

However, in individuals with psychotic or delusional depression, there is evidence that luvox can be more effective than SSRIs in monotherapy. This is important, since psychotic depression can be particularly hard to treat, and often warrants a antidepressant and antipsychotic.

For instance, there are a few case studies I have read where effexor worsened delusional depression, and a switch to luvox resulted in significant improvement.

For an individual with depression with psychotic features (which may or may not be mood congruent), I would think luvox would be a reasonable initial choice.
