So I'm taking Nardil and I think I'm having a tyramine reaction from some delicious vietnamese pho soup I had for lunch.
My BP is about 135/90 and I have a splitting headache.
My doc gave me a scrip for nifedipine in case of reaction.
Should I take one or just sit this out?

Thanks.
my BP is usually 120/80, so maybe I'm just having a mild reaction.

Ya that damn diet. try to avoid cheese totally unless its one of the white soft fresh varieties like ricotta, cream cheese, mozza (fresh not smoked or ages), cottage cheese etc...
and whatever you do...dont take OTC cold/flu remedies containing decongestants...you already know this though lol
Ive had a few slips myself...not with food but supplements/herbals...watch out when/if you play with those...nardil will bite you in the *ss when you least expect it

Well, i don't know the recpipe for pho exactly, but i haven't made anything vietnamese since i started on MAOI since they pretty much all need fish sauce or shrimp paste, which are both high in tyramine. So keep an eye on your BP, if you just ate.
I am not sure on sourdough, i have not seen anything conclusive, and it might be hard to tell because sourdough coudl have any sort of strain of yeast and bacteria. the specific strain has a lot to due with whether they produce significant amounts of tyramine.

Woke up about 1am with a splitting headache, took my BP and it was down to 125.
So everything worked out ok :)

> So everything worked out ok :)Are you taking the 10mg bite and swallow capsules? I took one of these once in a true hypertensive crisis(systolic over 200), and then rushed to the ER. Lucky I did, because the tyramine reaction wore off before my reaction to the nifedipine. I ended up spending the night in the hospital, on IV fluids, with dangerously low BP.
Obviously not everybody reacts to nifedipine this way, but many doctors will no longer prescribe the medication because of the possibility of this reaction. People die from low BP too.
Take care,
Jedi
