MAOIs and broad bean pods

Posted by bobbiedobbs on September 1, 2008, at 1:33:40

I could use some help in identifying exactly what are broad bean pods. A lot of the prepared salads, diners out and frozen dinners have various kinds of pea pods. I don't think all of them are broad bean but since I'm not sure I'm avoiding all of them. Any guidance will be appreciated.

That's a good question ,bobbiedobbs. I never quite was sure of the answer while I took parnate, although I just avoided beans other than green beans, particularly snow peas and fava beans.

Here's a definition from wiki:

"In much of the Anglophone world, the name broad bean is used for the large-seeded cultivars grown for human food.... The term fava bean (from the Italian fava, meaning "broad bean") is its most common name in the United States, with broad bean being the most common name in the UK."

~~What I was never 100% sure of is whether beans with large pods, other than fava beans--like lima beans and chickpeas--were included and, if so, which ones.

Fava beans are the one bean that's usually mentioned by name on lists of prohibited foods.

fava beans are the no-no broad beans. Pea pods are fine.

Thanks, Zeba. That's good to know, because I really love snow peas, and I've been sort of avoiding them even on Emsam. I don't think I need to, but I'm using a lot part of the day and thought I should be conservative. But I've actually been wondering about this lately.

Have you heard if licorice is okay? that's another one I have kicking around , but am not sure about it.

They say licorice is bad, but I have been known to down half to a whole bag of red licorice like tonight in one sitting. Black licorice might be okay but not halfa bag. LOL. I am on 40 mg. of Parnate.

20-year vet here - lots of licorice, no problems. However, I have only taken the processed candy variety - not sure about things like root licorice - although have had that in some quantities also.
