Does Zyprexa really cause EVERYONE to gain weight?

Posted by UgottaHaveHOPE on May 19, 2006, at 21:31:46

I know when taking Seroquel, it made me sleepy, which made me more inclined to lay around, and more likely to not exercise, which caused me to gain 20 lbs. Is that the same deal with Zyprexa?

I take 10 mg at night and am not gaining weight except maybe a pound or two. I have no energy but that could be from the emsam...

Can't answer this with respect to EVERYONE, but, for me, I gained about 20 pounds. I've been on 10mg for about a year now; it has helped my depression/anxiety somewhat (combined with Prozac) and I've recently added Lithium to my cocktail.

I get my lipid panels and fasting glucose checked every few months to ensure that weight gain is the only adverse effect of the Zyprexa. So far, the blood test results have been fine - chol. under 200 and glucose in the 90s.

Bottom line for me: The weight gain is worth it, given the "calm peace" that Zyprexa has given me a taste of.

I am too skinny to begin with, so weight gain from zyprexa was welcome. After about a year though I had lost most of it without even trying. I ate all the donuts and chocolate I wanted but the weight gain thing just stopped at some point.

I have sampled seroquel a few times and found it much more sedating than zyprexa.

Daily excercise on either of these is important, just a walk or jog for 30 minutes or more per day.

The problem as you noted, Seroquel more just puts you to sleep during the day, and while asleep you may only be "burning" half the calories that you take in when you're awake, which is normally on the order of one to two calories per minute (1440 in a day).

Zyprexa, and to an extend Seroquel not only does that to some people (actually I didnt find it so soporific as handshaking), but it modifies your lipid profile all by itself through unknown mechanisms. So your bad cholesterol goes up, as well as your lipid panel in general. This of course affects everyone differently so its generally regarded as a good thing to have your annual physical if not a more frequent diabetes and lipid panel test on either medication if you are putting on pounds.

(p.s. steady continuous excercise will drop your cholesterol, I put myself on a plan for that, but you have to be dedicated to it)

i've heard that those underweight have a higher chance of gaining weight than others.
also, i don't know all the medical terms but from what i understand it effect the part of your brain that tells you you're hungry and your body thinks it's hungry most of the time, many times craving carbs (high energy, quick fill but fattening and empty calories).
if you feel you are starting to gain weight. 1)drink lots of water 2)keep up healthy excersize and 3) watch you high carb intake (expecially at night).

for me, the first time i was on it i didn't gain any weight. the second time i was on it i was way underweight and i gained about 50lbs. but i don't know what would have become of me if i hadn't gone on it.
so even though the weight s@cks big time, it worked for me.

best wishes.
b2c.
