Too Much Lamictal?

Posted by smith562 on June 26, 2005, at 16:33:47

Hey Everyone,

I have found lamictal at 25 to 50mgs give me a good relief from my depression and helps me be more social. Strangely, doses over 100mgs seem to be counteractive and I feel more depressed.

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks

Hi,

I think Maxime got more depressed on Lamictal, I don't know how she did on low doses though.

PS. Do you know the whereabouts of Mitch?

Hey Ed,

Thanks for the advise! I don't know where Mitch is. Honestly, I don't read the babble too much now that I am feeling better. I remember several months ago he said he was doing well off all antidepressants .. that was the last I heard of him.

I hope he is well. Unforunately when people improved, they leave the babble (I am guilt of this too).

Thanks again.

This is VERY common with Lamictal. People often experience a brief improvement during the first week or two when they first start taking it, which of course is at a low dosage. This phenomenon probably has less to do with a low dosage as it does with an initial exposure. Some people even feel a bit better every time they increase the dosage early in treatment.

It is possible that you might not actually feel much more depressed, but rather, you have simply lost completely the antidepressant effect that Lamictal had been producing (Of course, I can't know for sure). You might not feel better with Lamictal again until you reach 200mg. It is uncommon that people should feel worse on Lamictal. However, cognitive and memory impairments can occur at higher dosages.

What other drugs are you taking? It doesn't seem that too many people receive a stable antidepressant effect from Lamictal unless they are taking other medications along with it.

My meds are ....

450 lithium
75 zoloft
10 selegiline
1 klonopin
25 lamictal

I have heard and personally experienced lamictal "poop out" .... or rather the initial stimulation period followed by a loss of antidepressant effect. Is this true from everyone or just a certain percentage of people? I need more something to help with my depresssion .... so far MAOIs are the best. SSRI just leave me flat and apathetic.

I don't know if you are going to receive much of an improvement from selegiline or the low dosage of Zoloft you are taking. I would go all the way and take Parnate 40-80mg, continue with the lithium, and continue to increase the dosage of Lamictal to 200mg. Of course, you are going to have to discontinue both the Zoloft and the selegiline.
