Withdrawal?

Posted by Mildred on January 26, 2005, at 8:25:47

Hi -
Been reading these posts for a couple of weeks - finally got up the nerve to ask my own question . . .
Does anyone know if withdrawal symptoms (from Lexapro) are likely to last more than 3 weeks? I am now on Day 26 since my last dose, after having tapered off very slowly under the supervision of my pdoc (I'm guessing that means psychiatrist????) Still feeling nauseated, headachy, and miserable. Saw the doc on Fri and we are thinking now that the continuing symptoms may more likely be symptoms of my depression rearing its ugly head again. I am currently on Wellbutrin XL also - was on 30 mg while I was on the Lexapro. Just increased it to 45 mg as of Saturday (5 days ago) - so far I'm still feeling lousy. I understand that it may take a couple of weeks to feel the effects if there will be any. It's just hard to wait.
The doctor actually suggested that I start on Cymbalta since it works on both the serotonin and the neuroponephrin, but I was hesitant to try such a newly approved medication.
Any educated guesses out there would be greatly appreciated -

Hi Mildred!

Yes they might do that.

>pdoc (I'm guessing that means psychiatrist????)

Yes it does :-)

Sorry to hear that. How did Lexapro treat you? Did you get relief? Side effects?

norepinephrine

Why does he want to change to cymbalta? Wasn't the response from lexapro sufficient?

Kind regards,
Mattias

Ooh - so perhaps I should wait a little while longer before trying any other changes. It is now 27 days since my last dose.

Actually, once the Wellbutrin was added, the Lexapro seemed fine. I had been getting very sleepy during the day while on the Lexapro alone.
When the Wellbutrin was added, we had discussed the possibility that I might be able to go off of the Lexapro at some point (at that time, I was dealing with some particularly stressful stuff - caretaker for ill parents). When my situation eased, I began to taper off of the Lexapro with NO negative effects. I got down to 5 mg/day for a period of about 6 weeks. It never even occurred to me that I would have any ill effects when I discontinued it (based on the ease with which I tapered).

Boy, I butchered that one, huh? Thanks! :)

I guess his thought was that I might be able to be treated with one drug rather than two. He is aware that I would like to take as few drugs as possible.
I guess the most obvious answer would be for me to just start back with the Lexapro. Probably shouldn't have rocked the boat! But now that I have and suffered this long, I would like to make sure that I have given the trial enough time before giving it up - just don't think I can hold out too much longer!

Mildred
