There was ongoing discussion if Pindolol or Bopindolol has antidepressive action. Pindolol and Bopindolol are acting at the 5ht-1A receptor as an antagonist. Controversaly Buspar acts as an agonist and is described to have some anxiolitic and antidepressant actions. Bopindolol is a very usefull drug because it does not elevate ldl, even improve apoA/apoB index and it acts for a long time.
Whats your experience with Pindolol or Bopindolol (side effects, antidepressive action)?

The proposed mechanism of these drugs is to activate the postsynaptic 5-ht1a receptor as much as possible.
Pindolol will augment an SSRI in almost a similar manner to lithium (which is also a presynaptic 5-ht1a autoreceptor antagonist like pindolol)
If pindolol is going to work to augment an SSRI, it will almost work immediately. By blocking the autoreceptors it blocks the shut off swich for serotonin release, and hence more gets released.
I have had sucess with lithium as an augmentation agent, and would like to see if pindolol works as well as lithium for this.
Buspar can take longer to work as agumentation since acting as an agonist it can take time to desensitize the autoreceptors, so essentilly you are upping the thermostat so to speak.
Anyhow, if pindolol augments an SSRI like lithium does, then I would give it my approval.

Hi alltogether, hi linkadge
Does the 5ht1-a receptor need to be antagonized, agonized or stimulated for the antianxiety, antidepressive effect? Are there any studies in this case?
(Pindolol works as an antagonist and has positive effects, some people say even without an ssri. Buspar works controversaly as an agonist?

Meanwhile I have found something very interesting:

When I needed to start taking blood pressure medication, I asked my doctor for pindolol because of what I'd read about it in regard to augmenting SSRIs. Unfortunately it has not done that for me. It does lower my blood pressure but gave me no detectable antidepressant boost with Celexa, Lexapro or Cymbalta.
This is the end of the thread.
