Nardil amd Melanina(Melatonina) for insomnia

Posted by Tepiaca on August 11, 2004, at 0:20:41

Hello Nardil fans
since I increased my dose to 60mg the insomnia on Nardil has appeared and this time worse than the first time a year ago .

I remember one doctor suggested me to try melatonine (melanine) . then I asked to another doctor about this and he told me No way !

I wonder if you have tried this wiht Nardil ??
do you think is a safe mixture?
what do you think?

do u think melatonine would help to treat Nardil insomnia ???

Difficult question ??

I'm sorry, Tep. I wish I could answer you, but I know nothing about melatonin. I was hoping someone else would jump in. Maybe MIA Ace? He might know.

Take care,
gg

I've been hesitant to jump in because I am not absolutely sure of the safety of the combination. Some literature seems to discourage the combination of melatonin with an MAOI for the reason of increased sleepiness. Of course, this is exactly the desired effect. I found nothing warning of any otherwise dangerous reaction. Melatonin is a derivative of serotonin, which might spook some doctors from suggesting it. I don't know.

I guess it makes sense to try melatonin before moving on to strong sleeping medications. However, I wouldn't be bashful about moving on to benzodiazepines like Ativan if you should need to. You might want to try taking the melatonin an hour or so before going to bed. If I were to do it, I would try to keep a 11:00pm to 7:00am sleep schedule, taking the melatonin at 10:00pm. Melatonin production naturally peaks at around 2:00am, so you might end up promoting a more natural sleep cycle.

Sorry, I didn't see the question, earlier.

I would think it would be safe, because you have melatonin and nardil interacting already. There has never been a safety issue raised of a problem between the two.

One problem with melatonin supplements I have seen is the dose. For some unknown reason, the standard pill size I come across has 3 mg melatonin. That is 8 or 10 times the normal physiological concentration in your brain. For many people, that dose is totally ineffective, because too much melatonin is as ineffective at inducing sleep as too little. It doesn't have a linear dose response. I break 3 mg pills down into pieces, to get about .4 mg (roughly, 1/8 of the original size). Others find 1/4 or 1/2 effective, so you need to do a little experimenting. Melatonin doesn't cause serotonin syndrome, or anything like that.

thanks larry !
bad news
I went to the drugstore yesterday to buy a little box of melatonine and I found in the back of the
box a warning message that said : Do not take it
together with MAOI or alchohol. =(

Have you read yours ??
