Ben was doing okay on 1 mg. risperdal, 25 mg. topamax (p.m.) and 2 weeks ago we started celexa---just 5 mg./day. He had been on lexapro (only 2.5 mg./day!) , doing great, before the topamax, but he got manic after about 2 months (he is autistic and bipolar). Anyways, he was/is doing okay but he got a rash from the celexa! Does anyone have any ideas about what other antidepressants are similar to celexa that we can talk to the doc about in a few days? He actually was doing better, I thought, on lexapro, ....didn't seem to be quite as sedating as celexa (am I right, or is it because of the topamax?) but I am sure the doc won't want to try it cuz of the reaction to celexa. anyone?
thanks,
elise

I don't know much about this, but I have read it is possible to have are rashes cause by ANY medication that modulate serotonin/histamine receptors. There are called serotonic induced rashes, I think.
And Celexa is an SSRI, so it would be my guess. (but then so is Lexapro).
Of course, it could be just the artifical color in the tablet..tartrazine (and other colors perhaps) have been known to cause rashes in some folk.
Did you give him some benadryl or something similar to help out for now?Jan

jan-
I did put some benedryl cream on him. Spoke to the doc on call and he said to take him off celexa and call him in a few days to talk about other options. Ben has been on numberous other meds (SSRI'S) in the past and has never had this type of rash. The only positive one he has been on was lexapro (at the beginning) and for a while he was on zoloft. Any ideas what I can suggest to the doc?

Perhaps if someone else had a similar reaction in a similar situation they might be able to tell you what they did.
Sorry no help, but it sounds like your doc knows what he is doing, which is good.

I agree with tealady. The color used in Celexa has been implicated in rashes in some cases. Since he was doing good on Lexapro, why was he taken off of it?

He was doing good on lexapro for the first couple months...but since he is bipolar, and wasn't on a mood stabilizer he got manic. I was hoping the doc would let him try it again since he is taking a small amount of topamax.

Since you mention that he is autistic, you should consider celiac disease. It also shows up as a skin rash. Many people have had success fixing behavorial problems with modifications in diet. Try this site for help.
