In reply to celexa rash-now what?, posted by e503 on September 23, 2003, at 15:37:52
Elise,
> Ben was doing okay on 1 mg. risperdal, 25 mg. topamax (p.m.) and 2 weeks ago we started celexa---just 5 mg./day. He had been on lexapro (only 2.5 mg./day!) , doing great, before the topamax, but he got manic after about 2 months (he is autistic and bipolar). Anyways, he was/is doing okay but he got a rash from the celexa! Does anyone have any ideas about what other antidepressants are similar to celexa that we can talk to the doc about in a few days? He actually was doing better, I thought, on lexapro, ....didn't seem to be quite as sedating as celexa (am I right, or is it because of the topamax?) but I am sure the doc won't want to try it cuz of the reaction to celexa. anyone?Elise,
I don't know much about this, but I have read it is possible to have are rashes cause by ANY medication that modulate serotonin/histamine receptors. There are called serotonic induced rashes, I think.
And Celexa is an SSRI, so it would be my guess. (but then so is Lexapro).
Of course, it could be just the artifical color in the tablet..tartrazine (and other colors perhaps) have been known to cause rashes in some folk.
Did you give him some benadryl or something similar to help out for now?Jan
