Extended-release meprobamate

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on September 1, 2003, at 13:50:41

My grandmother wanted me to ask about this as she's been taking meprobamate for about 35 years now and would like to switch to the extended-release form. Only problem is, I can't find any evidence that an extended-release formulation is even manufactured anymore. Anyone have any info on this?

It's Equanil, unless that's not extended-release, made by Wyeth. Cultural references to Meprobamate I've read from text in the 60's mentions how Meprobamate requires repeated dosing during the office day... so it must be annoying for her.

Has your grandmother thought of switching to a benzodiazipene? Ussually Meprobamate it weaned off with an augmentation of phenobarbital for a few weeks. Seems like grandmothers who have taken it for over three decades are the only ones who still use the stuff.

Of course, they're also the least likely to switch to a different prescription unless their doctor asks them to. I barely have the attention span to stay on the same stim for more than a few months, if that! I seem to constantly bounce from Dexedrine to Desoxyn to Adderall, from one month to the next.
