I am in menopause and my depression meds have stopped working for me after over 10 years. Has anyone experienced a change in your med needs because of menopause?

Has anyone experienced a change in your med
needs because of menopause?I haven't experienced menopause, but I started having perimenopausal symptoms around three years ago. My AD (nardil), which I had been taking for twenty years, no longer did the job for chronic major depression.

I don't know the answer to your exact question, but I do know that researchers are now looking at the links between depression and menopause. It seems that they make each other worse: depression can bring on early menopause, while menopause worsens depression. I saw the article on CNN.com a few weeks ago and posted a link to it with the Lexapro discussion, but it's probably not available on their site anymore.
Anyhow, just wanted to point out that you are probably right in seeing a causative relationship between your menopause and the ineffectiveness of the depression medications. Not that too many doctors are going to be up on the recent research (or even understand it -- some gyns I've been to haven't a clue as to how depression meds work on women). But good luck in finding answers! And please keep us posted, because I am interested in this issue of depression and menopause.

Thank you for responding! I was especially interested in finding out that Nardil stopped working, because that is what my doc is now proposing i take. I am reluctant to start it because of the side - effects and diet risk.

Hope we can keep talking about menopause, and depression. I read that estrogen loss can definitely effect how antidepressans work. I'll give you the name of the book if you'd like. Only thing is I'm not allowed to take HRT because of bleeding problems. But my depression has sunk so low that I need to go back on nardil after 10 years off. Haven't begun it yet, but wonder if anyone knows the interactions of iron tablets and other vitamin/minerals with nardil. I saw on this site that spinich is now added to the lists of no's...I know it has lots of iron, so now I'm wondering if iron can cause a bad reaction. I'm anemic and need it. Does anyone know?? Hope I hear from you. carly
