clinical trials anyone?

Posted by LA on February 4, 2003, at 12:24:52

Hi,
Has anyone participated in a clinical trial?
I am debating. I made the appointment for next week. Can't make up my mind if I should go or cancel. My PD has already said she can't do any more for me since the AD I am taking is not working.I would be making a change anyway. I feel as if, what do I have to lose. Both drugs in the trial are already FDA approved, just not in combination.Has anyone else had experience with clinical trials? I would appreciate your comments.
Thanks

If it's a trial of the Prozac/Zyprexa mix, I wouldn't do it. Zyprexa, of course, can cause TD. I'm saving atypicals till there's no other choice..no, I wouldn't take them then either.

I don't know about the trials thing but I would definitely get a new doctor--your doc says s/he can't do anything more for you because your current med is not working? What is it? How many others have you tried? If a doctor says they cannot do anything more for you, I cant imagine how discouraging that would be. This doc should lose his/her license.

Can't you just try the drugs in combo on your on.
Clinical trials area very involved and if you do one thing wrong or they say is against protocol,
they kick you out of the study.

Where is the study? What drugs are being used?

Bye,

Dave

What if they use a placebo? Make sure you ask.

I have tried to post 3 times and lost it all with the touch of a key, so please bear with me.

Thanks for your responseS. I'll try to be clear and answer your questions.
I suffer from depression.
Currently I have been on Effexor xr 300mg 5 months. It's not working. Added Lexapro for one week and stopped.

My Primary said she didn't feel comfortable increasing my dose or changing medications, there was nothing left for her to prescribe and would have to refer me to a psychiatrist.(which would not be covered by my insurance) She said my being allergic to prozac disqualifies me from taking an entire class of ad's. I have also taken nardil, and wellbutrin.

The trial is in N.J.. Clinic Trials. Celexa and risperdone(sp). I think I mentioned before both are fda approved, but not together. I found someone else on the board who said they had taken this combination with very good results.

What do you mean by getting kicked out of the trials?

All I know is at this point I have to get off the effexor. I can not function at all and things seem to be getting worse.

Thanks MA
I did ask about placebo. As I definetly would not be interested in participating. They said no placebo.

Your insurance covers no mental health?

Hopefully, you can find a way to see a pdoc. As far as I know, being allergic to Prozac in no way makes you allergic to all SSRI's.

Can you tell us more about your symptoms and how you actually reacted to meds?

You may be able to see a pdoc a few times, get a med that works and have your family doc write the scripts from then on. Just see the pdoc occasionally.

Good luck.

I was in a very early trial of paroxetene to determine the efficacy and safety of its longterm use. After I had been on the drug with increased dosages and close to a year on the drug (maybe it was only six months, can't remember) it was time to do follow up studies, blood work, a physical and a chest x-ray. All the results were fine except the chest xray. It showed a shadow of sorts which twas identified as sarcoidosis following an inconclusive bronchoscopy and then a mediastinoscopy. The drug company paid for all medical expenses since there was no way of proving that the paroxetene caused/did not cause the problem. The bottom line was I was "kicked out" of the study even though my depression was greatly relieved for the first time since taking all sorts of medication combinations.

The drug companies need to find out whether there are unknown or unexpected side effects. For me, it seems that since I was no longer involved the sarcoid episode could be ignored. And there was no attempt by the drug company to find another medication alternative and no way they would let me continue receiving paroxetene (it was not on the market yet).
