meltonin safe for long term use...

Posted by MoBe on November 30, 2002, at 13:06:05

Currently I am using remeron 15 mg and wellbutrin 150 mg. Although remeron is working great for sleep, together with the wellbutrin they really constipate me. As well I am struggling with trying to maintain my weight. I have two autoimmune disorders, one is thyroid (balanced now - I've taken radioactive iodine) and one is having phospholipid antibodies. My question is - if I take a very low dose ie. 300 mcgs. - because this dose isn't much higher than the body should actually make itself - is it likely to do me any harm. My doctor isn't sure but he has said, if I wish he will monitor me.

Thanks
MoBe

Hello MoBe,

I am not a physician, but from what I've read about Melatonin, it should NOT be taken by those with autoimmune disorders as it might exacerbate those conditions.

I am not aware of any problems that would be caused by taking melatonin but I'm not an expert on it.

Do you want to take melatonin instead of Remeron? Is it because of your weight gain? If you stop Remeron, won't your anxiety or depression return?

If sleep is the biggest concern, Ambien is a good suggestion. It is safe for long term usage.
