lamictal hairloss stopping after 8-9 months??

Posted by anniebananie on January 17, 2002, at 16:43:48

Hey all you lamictal users, has anybody experienced a frightening degree of hairloss from lamictal that seems to return to normal?

After 3-4 months of lamictal I suddenly started losing lots of hair & had dandruff that no shampoo could remedy. My gynocologist told me that sometimes hairloss that starts 3-4 months after some precipitating event is dramatic, but is actually caused by new hairs coming in. Since at the same time I tried making sure I didn't take too much vitamin A (it's pretty hard to find a supplement with less than 300% of the recommended amount), & that I got enough zinc & selenium. I also started taking saw palmetto on the advice of my pdoc and biotin on the advice of my hairdresser & using rogaine on the advice of a dermatologist I saw. I quit the rogaine a month or so ago, but for a few months now (I've been on the stuff since April) the amount of hair I lose daily seems to have returned to normal.

Has anybody had a similar experience? Any idea what, if anything, made it stop?

Thanks,
Annie

Here is some background on Saw Palmetto from the Annals of Internal Medicine:

ADVERSE EFFECTS
"Adverse effects of saw palmetto are rare and usually mild. In all randomized clinical trials in the above-mentioned meta-analysis, withdrawal rates (a rough indicator of patient acceptance) were 9.1% for saw palmetto, 11.2% for finasteride, and 7.0% for placebo. No herb-drug interactions have been described.

DOSAGE
Dose-finding studies of saw palmetto are not available. The dose most often used in clinical trials is 320 mg of a liposterolic extract daily, equivalent to 20 g of crude berries. Treatment usually lasts 3 to 6 months, but no data from rigorous long-term studies are available."

Thanks for the info, but could you please explain a little about withdrawal rates? Is it the percentage of people who stopped taking something because of adverse reactions so that the lower withdrawal rate indicates that something is better tolerated?

Thanks again,
Annie

Withdrawal rates mean how many people stopped taking the herb during a clinical trial due to side-effects.

Annie, I noticed you posted this some time ago. What experience have you had since? I am at about 14 months on Lamictal. Still worrying about the hair loss, but reluctant to DC something that has worked so well.
