Combining Zoloft with clonazepam or Xanax?

Posted by Anna M. on May 23, 2002, at 19:11:47

Has anyone had success for treatment of SP or PA with Zoloft taken with either clonazepam or Xanax? Am wondering if Zoloft plus benzo is good combination for SP and PA. If so, please say what dosage of each you took. Thanks!

Hi Anna,

How long have you been on the zoloft? The anti-anxiety effects of the SSRIs build up very slowly over time, and higher doses are often required when treating social phobia. People with anxiety disorders like quick fixes, but unfortunately it takes time. Interestingly, there was a recent study that cited duration of treatment as the only significant predictor of response to Paxil for social phobia -- many nonresponders at week 8 were responders at week 12. Anyway, with the Klonopin, I'd add it if you've already given zoloft a fair trial by itself or if you need it to be more comfortable while you're waiting for the zoloft kick in.

hang in there,
Jon

Hi,

Yes, SSRI+benzo combos are probably ideal for panic and SP problems. Just start out with 12.5mg of Zoloft. Clonazepam-you could just take whatever is required (min.) to *stop* panic attacks from the get-go. Then reduce the clonazepam to a maintenance level after you get up to a *tolerable* maintenance dose of Zoloft.
