I had been taking Remeron for one year. After slowly tapering over several months, I finally stopped it altogether twelve days ago. I am still experiencing anxiety and now a return of feeling depressed again. Is this something that given some more time might pass or does it sound like I need to restart the meds??? I would like to be off the meds but has anyone experienced this and then had these feelings resolve? If so how long did it take? Thanks for your help.

First of all : what you've been diagnosed with ? It's not unusual the return of bad depressing feelings after stopping the meds. This can depend from many reasons :
1) You did not take the meds long enough to recover (it can even take more than one year).
2) You have a cronic mood disorder like dysthymia. In this case I'd suggest to keep taking the meds (even for life) with some 1-2 months breaks spread all over the therapy.
3)This is a withdrawal syndrome, but I don't think so, seen that you said you slowly tapered the dosage in months. What i suggest is to resist and wait some 2-4 weeks without taking any med. If you still feel bad like that, the you should restart taking Remeron.
Best luck

Dear optomistic,
Ill give you an example of what happened to me off remeron. Iv been on it for 1 yr. Besides the wieght gain, its great for my deep dark moods. BUT IT doesnt make me happy go lucky. So i decided to stop it. 3 days later, my sleep went down hill, became very very anxious, and my mood, i felt dread dark sorrow. I remember flipping out on the slightest thing. I felt like the world was coming to an end.I would say this. If someone suffereing from severe depressioon, anxiety and sleep disorder, DO NOT just stop remeron. I would say, get on an SSRI, along with ambien for sleep, and a benzo. Remeron is like an antidepressant, sleep aid, benzo like all in one. even though remeron doesnt bind gaba, it may not be good for extreme anxiety. But for sleep, its a dream. A great combo would be remeron/an ssri and a benzo. Im currently on
remeron 30mg
zoloft 50mg
klonopin 1mgIf you feel too sedated, adding desipramine may help, which boost norepinpehrine, without extreme anxeity

Hi,
I started remeron in early February (30 mg) in addition to the 50 mg of nortryptline, 600 mg lithobid, and 7.5 of tranxene(benzo). I have unipolar depression. The doc wanted to get me off the TCA since I had been having some problems. I have a hunch the problems are related to excercise which seems to negatively affect me. I did go up to 45 mg of remeron but felt so spacey and zoned out. 30 also had me zoned out along with 22.5 mg. I could concentrate better, but have a terrible short term memory. I went down to 15 mg, and I sleep, but still have that sleep feeling around my eyes and am dulled. My question for you is did you start the zoloft after or before remeron? I am not sure what the next step is, but think maybe something that is more activating like an SSRI might me what I need. I want to work out since it helps my mood, but feel I am kind of trapped right now. I have never taken an SSRI. Thanks.

It's not just Remeron that can cause this. Stopping any antidepressant, even tapering off slowly, is going to cause a bumpy ride for awhile. It takes at least 3-6 weeks for the receptors to reestablish themselves. So in the meantime while you're white knuckling it, having some benzos around will help. Also, taking extra magnesium and calcium seems to help. If after a month or so you're still miserable then you may need the med.
The question is, do you need the med or is this just a symptom of 'coming down' off the med. I have this question as well, since I've never been able to stay completely free of any AD and have always had to go back on, even after 8 months off. I do wonder whether the AD actually fixes things or if indeed our neurological system becomes dependent upon them. I'm currently on Remeron and have found it to be my favorite of all the many ADs I've tried.

I'm trying to stop the Remeron now and am experiencing lethargy, returned patches of my mood falling drastically. How did this work out for you?
