Trileptal - Help!

Posted by PattyG on January 7, 2002, at 10:23:46

///Okay, my son had a seizure - doc prescribed Dilantin and that had too many side effects - he's now on 1200 mg. of Trileptal, but seems very emotional (for him) and I'm wondering if the medication could be a factor. He also said he had blood in his stool when he first started the Trileptal - is that a known side effect? I'm worried.

Trileptal and Tegretol can be activating and agitating for *some* people. You need to tell your doctor what is going on. Has your neurologist considered Depakote or Neurontin instead? He might find those more tolerable if he is sensitive to activation.

/////He's only tried Dilantin (made him incredibly sleepy) and now the Trileptal. Will see the doc on the 17th. I'm not sure I know what you mean by some are more "sensitive to activation." Can you explain a bit more? What about the blood in stool - I'm not finding that as a side-effect. Thank you for responding.

If it gets too bad, consider carbamazepine XR..the only one of its type in epilepsy. I have temporal lobe epilepsy (Complex-partial) and all I take for seizure control is carbamazepine, which is efficacious. As far as mood is concerned, he may need an antidepressant on board.

////Yes, he has had two and they're considered "complex-partial" as well. I'm sorry, but I'm drawing a complete blank - Carbamazapine - I can't remember what else it's called. Please adivse! (He is also taking Effexor for the depression.) Thanks so much for responding.

Trileptal made me extremely depressed. It kept getting worse, and my moods would cycle horribly with each dose. I'd start to feel better (and sleepy) about 10-11 hrs after my dose, then I would crash into suicidal, agitated depression two hours after my next dose. It has been 24 hrs now since my last dose and I am starting to feel somewhat normal again. Bloody stool is something that I, *personally*, would be on the phone with the doctor about ASAP (but, then again, I can be a hypochondriac; I get a headache and automatically assume it's a tumor).

Good luck to you and your son,
MB

My Mom was on Dilantin and phenobarbitol for her nocturnal seizures. I think if you looked for info at a website that has more information on pediatric epilepsy you will find more support and information. I believe Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University has a neurological bulletin board where a lot of Mom's of kids with Epilepsy discuss these type of issues. Does anybody out there have the link to their site-I don't have it bookmarked??

/////I'm keeping a pretty close watch - I thought the Dilantin, aside from making him sleepy, brought out an aura of anger. The Trileptal doesn't seem to make him as sleepy, but now I'm beginning to wonder about him being more emotional. We'll see. Are you still taking Trileptal??? I couldn't tell - but if so, guess I'd wonder why! Doesn't exactly sound as though it agree with you. As for the other problem, he picked up a "test kit" and now I'll just hope he follows through with that. Thank you for your concern.

////Thanks Mitch, but my son is an adult (28) so I guess I wouldn't need the info on pediatric epilepsy (however, the boards on children's illnesses are often very informative!) Thanks for your input - that was kind.
