I was first diagnosed as being depressed about 3 years ago (not only depressed, but "dysthymic"... constant, low-level depression). I then started Wellbutrin and things bascially got better and after about 2 years I stopped taking it.
Then after about 9 months, my depression came back. That was one year ago. I went back on Wellbutrin (400mg/day) and things only kinda got better. Then almost 3 months ago, I started taking Celexa (40mg/day).
Withing a few weeks, I started feeling better than I ever have in my entire life. That may sound melodramtic, but its true. I found myself actually feeling happy and content for no apparent reason -- a first for me.
I really believed, for the first time, that my depression was more a function of brain chemistry than external events.
But then two weeks ago, I stopped feeling so good. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but two weeks ago, I went out dancing with friends and did some GHB (which I'd done 2 or 3 times before since being on the Celexa, without problem).
I started feeling bad mood-wise within a day or two... but I thought only because I had gotten sick: I had a very bad case of strep and missed several days of work.
I got over the strep, but still feel not only down, but depressed.
It doesn't seem likely that that night of GHB use threw off my brain chemistry for so long, right?
And if that's not what happened, why has Celexa stopped being effective so soon?
I was really getting used to having a "normal" baseline mood and want it back! :-)
What should I do?

Hey Eric -
First off, I'm sorry that I'm not qualified to answer your question about the Celexa/GHB combo - I'd talk to your doctor about it...
However, and in a total nonjudgmental, concerned spirit - please don't go near GHB! Having already seen one person drop dead on the dancefloor after taking GHB is enough for me to avoid it like the plague. It's really impossible to know when too much is too much and overdose and adverse reactions are rampant. Hence the ready ambulances in front of all the clubs/raves.
Good luck...
Daniel

I just increased my celexa dosage b/c the effect started to wear off - my pdoc says that your body can learn how to metabolize the Celexa more efficiently, which causes your blood levels to drop, so you need to take more for the same effect - might be worth a try.

Thanks, but I've already sworn off the stuff. :-)

Eric, I'd say the GHB had a lot to do with it. Recreational drugs that affect our brains often leave users with the blues for several days after. This goes for people who aren't clinically depressed also. It's happened to me often after doing acid, e, drinking binge, etc. These are all things that, of course, shouldn't be done...but life gets boring sometimes. You have to weigh the boost you get one night against the despair that might follow.

Yeah, you're probably right about the GHB. I certainly had a GREAT time that night, but it wasn't worth the dispair that followed, that's for sure.
Just an update... I spoke with my pdoc and we decided to up my celexa to 60mg/day. I actually had upped it myself a few days before that, so I've been at the increased dose about a week and I'm already starting to feel better.
