Has anyone ever heard of visterol? My pdoc suggested I take this instead of
a traditional AD/anti-anxiety med. I was living happily on serzone for the last
3 months, but found out I was pg and had to stop (for at least the first trimester).
Has anyone had experience with this med? I can't seem to find anything about it on
the web.Thanks,
karenR

Atarax is very similar to Vistaril too...
Ferreri, M. 1. Hantouche, E.-G. 2. Recent clinical trials of hydroxyzine in generalized anxiety disorder. Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Supplementum. 98 No. 393:102-108, 1998.
"Numerous clinical trials in the 1960s and 1970s have attested to the anxiolytic efficacy of hydroxyzine and its beneficial effect on sleep, as well as in reducing stress and anxiety associated with coronary disease. Experience with hydroxyzine has also shown a lack of organ toxicity and an absence of dependency. Recent controlled clinical trials with hydroxyzine have confirmed its efficacy (at a fixed dose of 50 mg) in generalized anxiety disorder - superiority over placebo on all anxiety measures from the first week with early target symptoms which are grouped in a cognitive component of anxiety. Efficacy was maintained throughout the 4 weeks of treatment and after abrupt discontinuation. In another controlled trial vs. lorazepam, hydroxyzine demonstrated greater and more rapid cognitive improvement."

I take that PRN for itching related to allergies I have and it does seem to have an anxiolytic effect during the next day.

Karen:
The reason you probably haven't found any info on the web is that the name of the med is Vistaril, not Visterol. Try this spelling and I think you'll find lots of info- it's been around a long time. Generic name is Atarax.

I took it as an inpatient and loved it. Best sleep I ever had and didnt wake up with that hangover feeling. Im not sure I would take it pregnant tho...
I know this sounds totally lame, but have you tried peppermint tea? You have to be REALLY careful with herbs when preggo but peppermint is ok.

However, it tends to be stimulating to some. Lemon Balm tea would generally be more calming and tastes good also. Try some Alfalfa, Nettles and Red Raspberry leaves in a tea if you're in the first or third trimester of pregnancy.

Medications in A and most in B can be safely taken, D under dire circumstances and X not ever (Thalidomide, e.g.).

due to its inherent severe drying of the body's fluids, i can't imagine that Atarax would be helpful to a growing fetus.
