I Sat Down 2 Weeks Ago and wrote .................

Posted by tina on July 18, 2001, at 20:11:48

a drug history for myself. I thought back and tried to remember all the drugs I've taken for anxiety and depression over the last 13 years and it's scary. I have tried 14 different meds and none of them have worked longterm. I've tried SSRI's, MAOI's, TCA's and numerous anxiolytics. I took Manerix for 3 years and it helped but when i retried it last winter, it didn't work at all. Not to mention it costs an arm and a leg. Should I try it again or what?
I still take clonazepam for panic attacks but my doc won't refill the scrip because she says it's too addictive(the most I have taken on any given day is 2 mgs for god's sake--does that sound like I am in danger of abusing it?, geezzzz)
I'm just wondering what's next? My depression starts as anxiety and then when I start feeling like I can't leave my house because of panic I get depressed. My friends think I'm antisocial and bitchy and stop calling me to go out because they know I'll say no.

Is there something out there that helps with anxiety-induced depression? I know the depression is peripheral and the constant fear causes it, so what do I do?
Would another kind of MAOI be worthwhile here? Nardil, Parnate etc?
I just feel so defeated and confused.
Please let me have your honest opinions
thanks
Tina

Bummer that your doc will not refill your Klonopin prescription - I've been on it for years, and the times I've forgotten to take it for even a couple of days I had NO withdrawal type symptoms. But that was only a few days off it.

Anyway, if you could list the various meds you've tried (you said like 14 of them - SSRI's, MAOI's, TCA's and numerous anxiolytics), I can see if I've had any experience with some of them and tell you about it.

Your symptoms sound similar to some of mine -

I took Manerix for 3 years - my depression starts as anxiety and then when I start feeling like I can't leave my house because of panic I get even more depressed.

There ARE things out there that help with anxiety-induced depression, but I wouldn't want to be repetitive with suggestions so that's why it would be helpful to hear what you have already tried that did not work.

And what is Manerix? Never heard of that. Respond under here and I'll try to help you out!

Hi Tina. Is Manerix the only MAOI that you have tried. You haven't tried any non-reversible MAOIs similar to nardi or parnate? If you haven't, I can't understand why. Because of your anxiety, I would think that nardil would be an excellent choice for you. You'd have to put up with some diet restrictions that you might not have had to with manerix, but it's definitely worth it. Parnate is also an excellent MAOI, but it may be too stimulating for you, if anxiety is such a large factor. Has your pdoc never suggested nardil?

Hmm, those are my symptoms pretty much and I'm dxd as BPII. I don't know if you said you tried a mood stabilizer or not, but if you did, did it help at all?

Manerix is called Aurorix in the US. It's moclobemide.
thanks for wanting to help.

Mirtazapine - the world's first NASSA for treatment-resistant cases, also helps with sleep, sexual dysfunction

clomipramine - a tricyclic with prominent effects on serotonin and norepinephrine like Effexor

nortriptyline - another analog of imipramine

olanzapine - atypical neuroleptic with prominent anti-anxiety and antidepressant properties due to its effects on the 5HT-1A receptor

Risperidone - proven to reduce suicidality among inpatients

Lamotrigine - a mood-stabilizer with the most antidepressant effects, it also inhibits the reuptake of serotonin

Carbamazepine - proven in 50% of treatment-resistant unipolar patients

Gabapentin - I'm surprised you haven't tried this drug which has been specifically proven in anxious-depressive states

NASSA?? Explain please.
Thank you for all the options Salarmy4me.
What is the weight gain probablility with any or all of the meds you suggested. It's a BIG issue for me.
thanks again

I think it stands for NorAdrenaline-Selective Serotonin-Agonist. If I had to rank the options I presented as far as weight gain, from worst (1) to best (8) they would be:
1. Clomipramine
2. Nortriptyline
3. Olanzapine
4. Risperidone
5. Mirtazapine
6. Carbamazepine
7. Gabapentin
8. Lamotrigine (can cause weight loss)

My prediction of which would work from highest chance (1) to lowest (8) would be:
1. Clomipramine
2. Mirtazapine
3. Nortriptyline
4. Lamotrigine
5. Carbamazepine
6. Gabapentin
7. Olanzapine
8. Risperidone

First, thanks for letting me know the US names for Manerix (now I can do a search to find out what kind of med it is; that's what I'm wondering!)

As to suggestions for you, let's see ... you've already taken some of what I have, namely clonezapam, celexa, effexor, paxil and amytriptiline.

Therefore, I would recommend Zyprexa, which I've heard can help with anxiety and racing thoughts, etc. I'm currently taking it for sleep (along with Klonopin - so far, so good, hope it doesn't poop out before I get on the right sedating anti-depressant for sleep and depression). It is helping me somewhat with anxiety, but seems to be pooping out for that (then again, I'm on a very low dose).

I have not been bothered by any major side effects on Zyprexa, but again, I'm at a low dose.

The other thing that might help you would be a mood stabilizer, like Depakote, Lamictal, etc. These are classified as anti-convulsants/seizure meds, but have been found to work on anxiety, bipolarII, etc.

GOOD LUCK - keep us informed here!
-Janelle

Hi T. I think all the problems I have are anxiety driven also. I will nibble on a .5 klonopin all day & have been doing this for al most 2 years. Docs are so paranoid about the addiction thingy. I have tried 2 different mood stabilizers that seemed to have subtle but noticeable effect on my anxiety with little or no side fx. The first was Neurontin. I was taking as much as 3200 mg (4x800) with no problems. The other was Topomax. I don't know if it is specifically listed to relieve anxiety but it sure helped mine. Also it is a bit of an appetite suppressant for most. Some people have complained that the Topomax turned them into cognitive idiots, but since I was already an idiot, I didn't notice this effect. :) What a hassle but maybe a new doc might be more inclined to give you the medicine you need to stay well. Good luck. Take care

I appreciate so much your interest in trying to help and the drug info. Remeron isn't available in Canada but the others are and I'm going to talk to my GP about some of them and do some research on my own.
Sal, Kid47 and Janelle...a special hug for you!! thank you
