gaba system, any new drugs?

Posted by rogdog on December 31, 2000, at 14:56:28

I am taking 3 mgs of xanax a day and it is working great , so I expect that it is working on a system(GABA) that my body is deficient in. but the only problem is that it is so short acting that I cant quite get stabalized. does anyone know of any medication available overseas or one that has just been approved? I have tried valium and a few other benzo's but they just dont seem to help near as much as the xanax. I dont know why...I Have heard of this..pregabilin stuff, any info? thanks so much, rogdog

Hi, this is not new, but you might try Pikamilone (or Picamilon) it is a drug developed in Russia wich combines niacin and gaba obtaining a different product.

Well, just informative suggestion, I do not know what you take Xanax for. Xanax is good but is is regarded as one of the most easy to get accoustomed to.

Have you tried going on klonopin? I just got my benzo changed last month and I'm very pleased. I was on xanax and my anxiety levels were a roller coaster. This also made me crave them and I found myself needing more and more. The klonopin comes on slow, stays there almost all day and works on the same system (just a longer acting benzo). It has been a miracle drug for me. I have had a great improvement in anxiety and panic from the switch, because it feels like its always there in just the right amount, not too much, not to little. I've heard some people claim its more addictive than xanax and I have no clue how this can be!

I may have missed it in the thread, but one of the newest GABAergic drugs is tiagabine (Gabitril). It was recommended to me by Patrick J. McGrath to put on my list of things to try to treat my refractory bipolar depression. I think his basis for recommendation was anecdotal communications with colleagues and that it was simply one more anticonvulsant with pro-GABAergic properties to take a shot at.

Generic name: tiababine
Brand name: Gabitril
Manufacturer: Abbott Laboratories - > to be sold to Cephalon

Let me know if anyone has had experience with this drug. I think I'll hit the Web to see what impressions people have of its use in mood disorders. If you guys come up with anything, please post.

Thanks.
