Celexa Dosage Increase

Posted by Anomie on May 18, 2000, at 20:45:51

I have been on 20mg Celexa since 3/3/00. It worked great for a few weeks...but now I'm getting
more and more depressed, actually more on the 'irritable' / snappy side. Anyone experienced this?
If so, anyone benefit from an increased dosage?

Anomie- I'm experiencing a similar result. I've
been taking 20mg Celexa since the beginning of
April. I was pleased with it's effect. My mood
improved considerably, I was able to think more
clearly, my thoughts, and reading and writing skills
were becoming more focused. I was still very lethargic
but with the improved mood I was able to take
positive action and exercise each day. I was also
able to get my butt out of bed in the morning
instead of the afternoon. I had also planned to
return to work half-time this week.

About 2 weeks ago it seemed as if the Celexa lost
it's effectiveness. My thoughts are scattered, the
'bad' self destructive thoughts are a constant again.
When the Celexa was working, I was easily able
to ignore or push those thoughts away. My mood
is very low. These effects did not happen gradually,
it was abrupt. Was it the same for you?

I'm very unhappy about this change. I am unable
to return to work as planned because I lack the
ability to perform my job as an estimator/project
manager. It's a very detail oriented job, reading
plans and technical specifications, writing contracts
and subcontracts, negotiating, etc. My boss is not
too happy that I'm still on leave either. I've been
off 3 months and my savings are depleted. I need
to get back to work.

I did up my dose to 40mg after 2 weeks at 20mg but
the nausea was too much for me. I had nausea on 20mg
but it has finally gone away. My pdoc has been on
vacation, I have an appt with her on Monday. I'm
going to ask about an increase to 40mg. This morn
I took 40mg and I plan to continue the 40mg until
I see my pdoc, I've got my fingers crossed, hoping
this will help.

Sorry I can't provide answers for you, but you are
not alone. I hope that we both find a solution.

Take Care

I have had the same thing. Not sure if I should up the dose or go off and start something else. it did work, so my thought is to go to 30mg but will wait until we hear more advise and what Harry's doctor says.

Ella, I am currently on 40mgs. of Celexa. It had no effect on me at all at 20 and 30 mgs., so my doctor increased the dose over a two month period. Now I am finally noticeing some improvement in my mood. Nothing dramatic, but am definitely more interested in life and hopeful. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. CarolAnn

How are you, CA? Glad to hear the Celexa is starting to work.

Harry--

Sorry to hear that the Celexa pooped out on you. Incredibly frustrating, isn't it, when a med opens a window to a brighter life only to slam it in your face? At least you know it's *there*. What one thing opened, something more, or something else can open again, for longer.

I was hit by nausea (and other side effects) when I began Efexor XR; every time I increased the dose, the side effects returned. The higher the dose, the longer the SEs lasted. Do let your pdoc know about the nausea, tho, because there are a number of meds which can help relieve it--phenergan and compazine are both available as suppositories if it's hard to keep anything down. And, if you're not averse to under-the-counter substances, mj is a favored Tx for the nausea of chemotherapy, which can be as bad as it gets.

Others here with more psych med experience may have some specific suggestions, but, is it possible that you need to add an augmenter or "stabilizer" Rx to the Celexa 40mg. to help its effects last longer?

Hope Monday goes well; keep us posted!

Well wishes--medlib

I had to take Celexa 40 mg in two doses, 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg at night in order to tolerate the nausea.

Perhaps this will work for you too. I now take 10 mg in the morning and 20 mg at night and it works just fine without any side effects.

I didn't get very good results with 20 mg and I didn't think the 40 mg would work especially with the nausea, but my doctor convinced me to stick with Celexa at least for a few weeks at 40 mg. I'm glad I persisted and could tolerate it by splitting the dosage.

Hope it works for you too. Let me know if this helps at all.

MA

Hey Noa, sorry it took me so long to reply, I haven't been online in a few days.
Anyway, I'm pretty good, not great or completely *well* yet, but better enough that I'm going to tell my Pdoc that I don't want to change any meds. for a while. I guess rather then "good", I would say that I feel stable. And, I definitely don't want to risk getting worse by changing anything med-wise. Thanks so much for asking! It's nice to know that people think about me when I haven't been around for a while! BTW how are you getting along these days? Did you decide what to do about your medications? I can't remember, are you still taking ritalin? If so, maybe you should ask about switching to Adderall, just to see how it effects you. The first month I was on it was the best. I managed to get my whole house cleaned and organized! It's not as effective now, though I do feel worse when it wears off. Hope these questions aren't redundant, it's hard for me to read all the threads when I haven't been here in a while. Best wishes! CarolAnn

Hi MA-

Saw my pdoc, she increased the Celexa from 20mg
to 40mg. I increased it myself several days ago,
no improvement yet but I'll keep the faith.

Haven't had any more nausea problems with the
increase.

Pdoc wants me to stay off work for another month.
I agree because this stumble wrecked my mood,
concentration, etc., but I've been off 3 months
and my financial situation is grim.

This is the end of the thread.
