I gave up on prozac after it "pooped out" about two and a half years into the regimen. I've tried wellbutrin (works for smoking, but made me anxious) and I'm now on effexor and not really happy (but not clinically depressed any more either). Thing is that for the first year that plebian, unglamourous prozac worked just great.
Anybody had any experience going back on an ssri after a three year hiatus?

YES. I stopped the Prozac not because of poop out but because I was feeling better, and the thinking floating around at the time was that 6 months to a year of "correction" might be sufficient. Thing is, when I went back on SSRIs three years later, they worked fine at first, but then I needed higher and higher doses, which brought on problematic adverse effects, etc.

Some people on this board have augmented prozac with Revia (Naltrexone) with good results. I have an appt with my pdoc on the 29th to try this combo myself. I will keep everyone posted on my progress with it.

I have an appt with my pdoc on the 29th to try this combo myself. I will keep everyone posted on my progress with it.I was on Prozac for many years - 7, I think. Started at 20 mg., then up to 30 then 40 mg. My depression started to get worse and worse. I got a consult to see a psy from my GP. My first.
That was weird. In about thirty minutes I went from being depressed to Bipolar and Psychosis NOS. And then a whole slew of meds that really f--ed me up, including Topamax, Wellbutrin, Paxil, Effexor, and Zoloft.
After two more vists with that doc, (who became quite defensive when I asked her to explain how she got her diagnosis and couldn't it possible be anxiety or hypoglycemia) she transferred my care to another psy who thought perhaps some Lithium and Zyprexa would be nice. All this after I told him I didn't feel the diagnosis was right. That's when I had to put the breaks on the whole med business, stay in weekly touch with my therapist - who by the way was apalled (sic) by my experience. I took myself off everything
but the Zoloft. It's only been a week so I don't know if it's helping. I know all the meds in a two month time didn't help and the two doc's really weren't too interested in my physical or environmental (home) concerns. It was one big SYMPTOM-CHASE. I guess I'll tell the second psy guy about it again in two weeks. This has been just awful - and I all do is cry - and can't understand what's up with these doctors and why they don't listen to you. It's like you're not even in the same room with them.
Wow - Guess I got off the track. Yes the Prozac pooped out. Sorry I wandered - flight of ideas and all that!
Thanks for letting me talk about it. Brenda

2)No I didn't try that. I started on Prozac with a GP during a major depressive episode and switched to a (great) pdoc in mid-regimen so that I could finally diagnose/deal with ADD/ADHD issues. I think he's bigger on the ssri's (and wellbutrin) that affect dopamine and noradrenaline as well as serotonin for ADD/ADHD, but I think my minimal stimulant dosage (15mg/d dexedrine, also xr) really handles a lot of that.

There is no reason to stop at 20 mgs Prozac. Some take 40-60 and I have heard of doses as high as 120. If a med is having few side effects but no or few good effects logically to me you scould raise the dose. There is no other logical way to to know if whatever dose is enough in any person. 150 mgs is the least amount of Effexor XR I can take and I usually take 300 and gone to 450. Rest assured that the higest dose listed in the PDR and the right dose for a person are not always the same thing.
