Prior to my own illness, I spent 12 years as a newspaper editor and you are spot on. As much as people may claim otherwise, if newspapers dropped all the bad news, they would go out of business. As Don Henley once wrote, "We love dirty laundry." I had an interesting conversation with my publisher once about what our responsibility as journalists was, to give readers what they want or what they need. He laughed and called me a liberal. Sadly, another type of news has joined bad news as the big seller in the media: celebrity news. I think we reached our peak as a species when Da Vinci died and our next evolution will be the merging of man and machine. Collectively I don't think we're smart enough to long survive, otherwise. Really good writing, by the way. Keep giving readers what they need.
