I attend a weekly bipolar support group. This week a regular fellow came in deeply depressed and admitted he had been feeling suicidal that day but wasn't at the moment. I wasn't convinced because he seemed so bad. The day before his wife had taken him to the ER because she had to go to work and was afraid to leave him alone. For some reason the hospital didn't admit him.
I think the facilitator was about to go onto the next person in the group but I had to ask this poor guy another question: did he have a suicide plan? He described in detail what he would do and it would be fatal. It was decided unanimously by the group that he not be allowed to leave and one member escorted him to the ER (our support group takes place in a hospital, fortunately).
It was very sad and scary but we were so relieved he came to group that night. Maybe we saved his life.
