Using a brown dye ought to be okay. You wouldn't want to put more lightener (bleach) on it, because that would damage it.
This summer I decided to go back to blonde after being a redhead for a coulple of years. It was kind of a disaster. My natural color (blonde that has gotten darker with age) had grown out a few inches on top with the red on the ends. When I bleached it, it turned the top almost white blonde, and the ends a sort of light orange color. It took forever to get it to the right color. First I tried a temporary color, which didn't work at all, then I had to use a beige blond on it to even it out, and then (after a couple of weeks had passed so as not to damage it) I was able to put the golden blonde on it which was what I wanted.
Almost as soon as I got it back to normal, I wanted it red again.
