Slinky,
Perhaps the problem with self-destructive behavior in whatever form is that we have to rely on ourselves to get us thru the day, the hour, the week, the year. So self-abuse (and I don't mean masturbation) is self-defeating and it only adds to whatever other crap is already going on in our lives. It is intrinsically damaging and makes us less able to get through the day, hour, etc. It's like, if we were our own cars, the only reliable means of transportation at our disposal, and we really need it to be there for us...so, one evening we go out and beat on the car with a baseball bat. The next evening we poke the tires with nails. The next evening we put a little sugar in the gas tank. The next day at lunch, because we really have to be somewhere important after work, we knock a hole in the radiator with an ax.
Or, if we were our own washing machines.....nah, just kiddin'...I won't take you there...
Point being, which I'm sure you've gotten ad nauseum, if we destroy ourselves we aren't much good to ourselves, and we are all we have.
