Sometimes we view ourselves as being static when others see great change about us. The important thing is that you always will be Deneb, and you always have been Deneb.
Some of the things you've gone through can certainly be considered a kind of "maturation", but you don't have to start out as a kit in order to mature. I hope in a year I'll be more mature than I am right now, for instance.
Tell your pdoc you're having a hard time interpreting her views
