For me, nortriptyline has a distinct "mood brightening" effect that desipramine lacks. My only stable remission lasted for 9 months. I was taking Parnate + desipramine. My doctor decided that I should discontinue treatment because of the emergence of mania (bordering on psychosis). I relapsed 2 months later, and that combination never brought me to remission again.
